"Do you know why I pulled you over?" will be illegal in California from January 1, 2024. Now police have to tell you why they pulled you over.

The idea is to stop pre-textual traffic stops, in which an officer pulls over a driver, usually Latino or African-American, intending to find a reason to search their vehicle for contraband.

Research shows that pre-textual traffic stops are a racist practice that nets very little contraband. #acab

So much of Musk's "visionary leadership" is classic mismanagement. He's not just nuking the one area in which he Tesla can lock-in market dominance (the EV chargers), he's doing it in the most chaotic manner possible, without any plan for going forward. https://electrek.co/2024/05/03/read-the-wild-email-tesla-is-sending-to-suppliers-amid-supercharger-chaos/

@maxkennerly What are the odds that Tinucci's stellar results didn't sit well with Musk because she is a woman? So he bit off his nose to spite his face.

It would have made more business sense to spin off the Superchargers into their own company under Tinucci.

Cats are a major food source for urban coyotes in Southern California according to a study conducted by National Park Service and California State University Northridge (CSUN).

"Cat remains were found in 20 percent of urban coyote scat as compared to four percent of suburban coyote scat."

English-language news feed. This is continuously updated.

The evacuation of Grindavik last night went very well. A magma tunnel has formed under the town. These typically erupt at one or more spots along the tunnel. The timeline could be in hours or days.

Quakes have already caused geological markers to move apart by 1 m or more. Significant damage to roads and buildings.

Good news: First mountain lion to use the new wildlife tunnel under Hwy 17 at the Laurel Curve has been caught on video.

It took ten months from completion of the tunnel in January, but at least one big cat has figured it out. The first bobcat OTOH was seen using the tunnel within 15 minutes of mounting the cameras.

Lots of other wildlife, from coyotes to squirrels, have been using the underpass to avoid traffic on the busy .

New sympathy cards in my Etsy store. These are in cool blue and green tones and come with and without pearls. They're a non-standard size, so I made custom envelopes for them.

I can easily make these in other colors if you have a specific requirement.

“It was just supposed to be a fun thing, and now all six of us are on antibiotics,” a participant in last weekend's Sonoma County Tough Mudder race says.

Sonoma County Department of Health Services has issued a health advisory for all racers. Many have tested positive for staph infections or Aeromonas, a serious bacterial infection.

There was a credible threat to the cathedral in Cologne and a couple of alleged terrorists have been arrested.

Even if you don't understand German, take a look at the third video on this page. The person being interviewed is the spokesperson for the police in Cologne. Consider his dress, his body language, the care he takes in choosing his words. It's incredibly different to how a police spokesperson in a major city in the US would appear.

Arborist Steve Nimz on the famous Lahaina banyan tree. Leaves and twigs are dead but branches, trunks and aerial roots are alive.

They're watering it and giving it nutrients. They'll be aerating the soil and adding a compost mulch as well. Hopefully they'll be able to tell within 3-6 months if the tree is responding to the treatments.

@ai6yr Except for going out without checking the weather forecast, they did everything right.

They left their itinerary with relatives, they hiked in a group, they had tents and sleeping bags, they had well-charged devices for communication.

Makes me wonder how they could overlook the weather and sunset. 🤔

Welcome to the Sharing Winter All Year Card Hop Challenge 5! ❄️
Hosted by @thatcraftygolden. We are thrilled to announce this month's theme: Worldwide Wintertide

This was such a fun challenge! I created a Yule box card for it. For the box construction, the license plate and the Viking I used products from @mftstamps. Their box card products are really well designed and easy to use! Find clickable links to all products in my blog post at ValleyOakPaper.com

Having watched Safiya Nygaard tuft a rug, I too want to try it.

There's a place in San Jose that offers rug tufting workshops. They start at $100 though. That's perfectly reasonable for a 4-hour experience, but more than I'm comfortable spending right now.

Tip: You can avoid all of these problems by avoiding invasive medical procedures run out of sketchy storefronts just to cater to your sense of vanity, and deal with the fact that you will, indeed, age.

mjausson,
@mjausson@mastodon.design avatar

@ai6yr I wish it were just vanity, but it's also acceptance and just being treated right.

Women who appear young are treated much better than women who age naturally. This matters in lots of contexts: judicial, medical, the workplace and so on. There's lots of quantitative research on it, as well as anecdotal stories.

It sucks, but the cult of youth is real and affecting lives every day.
