I don't go to many concerts these days, but the best one I went to in 2023 was the Freddie James Project performing at #Poutinefest last year.

Poutinefest has returned to #Brossard, and I see that #FreddieJames will be performing again this Saturday. If you're in the #Montréal area then you should really consider coming. It's walking distance from Panama Station too.

Here's a video, though not nearly as good as I remember the performance:

We've all been having a good laugh about sparkling autocarrot suggesting that people include glue in the cheese on pizza, and that we should all eat rocks.

But at the same time, you can buy mushroom identification books in Amazon that are "written" using sparkling autocarrot.

Actual printed books. On how to tell very similar poisonous and non poisonous mushrooms apart. Something that is really hard for skilled humans in some cases.

Who has liability when people start dying?

"What we really ought to learn from history’s grotesqueries isn’t “different strokes for different folks” or “we’re so much better than them.” It’s that we’d better be humble about our own virtue if giants like Macdonald could go so wrong on some issues. My questions were meant to make readers think about their own beliefs, not because I really want people on the Fediverse to reveal to me my mistaken opinions — nearly everyone here disagrees with my politics after all.

But I'll tell you what: I'll boost replies telling me (politely) what I'm wrong about, if the post also says what its writer worries he or she might be getting wrong.

How do you politely suggest to someone that what he has posted on the Internet might get him in trouble at work, without sounding like you're making a veiled threat? Is staying quiet the best policy, unless the other person knows you well?

"Nice blog you've got here. Shame if someone were to let your boss know what you wrote..." <-- the impression I don't want to give.

Breaking news is when I really miss Twitter. I have learned about the surprise announcement of the 4 July general election in the UK many times from many channels long before it appears in any form or shape in my Mastodon feeds. It's all right. Maybe Mastodon isn't meant to play that role. But if it is, there's still a long way to go.

I cannot overstress how envious I am of democracies that have election campaigns of 6 weeks instead of 2 years

mpjgregoire, (edited )
@mpjgregoire@cosocial.ca avatar

@Lazarou
It's precisely because no one knows exactly when the election will be (until the PM decides) that the campaign period is limited. If the Tories and Labour knew a year ago that the election would be at the start of July, then they'd have had an incentive to start campaigning earlier, to get a jump on the other party.

"On a fair day in 1838, barely two years into Queen Victoria’s reign [...] a young, confident and handsome Mississauga Ojibway chief named Kahkewaquonaby [...] came knocking at the doors of Windsor Castle dressed in his finest leather from head to toe and asked to make an appeal to his Sovereign. The door was opened and tea and sympathy were offered. [...] The Queen promised to look into the request and in due course the deeds were handed over."

@evan There's an article by Prof. @yuanyi_z on at https://thecritic.co.uk/issues/december-january-2024/on-international-law/

"International law tends to be poorly understood, even among lawyers. But it retains an aura among laymen which frequently leads to its invocation as a form of higher law, though often in a severely mangled form. Recent events such as the wars in Ukraine and Gaza have made the problem even more acute, so that it may be useful to provide here a short primer of some of its salient features."

mpjgregoire, (edited )
@mpjgregoire@cosocial.ca avatar

@timbray The odds of a Judgement Day type event are small, though since the consequences would be extremely grave, it deserves a little concern.

What worries me more is the high likelihood that information on the Internet will become even less trustworthy, and that grave errors will occur because people rely on plausible-looking results from LLMs that make important errors — diseases mistreated, bridges collapsed, innocents jailed.

I honestly don't understand the anti vax movement. My cynical mind is thinking some group must have something to gain from convincing people to harm themselves and others, but I can't find any logical upside for anyone.

Is it simply to watch the world burn? Is it to discredit medical expertise in general? Or is it some stubborn misplaced sense of independence? Surely it can't simply be to thumb their noses at the "Woke"?

mpjgregoire,
@mpjgregoire@cosocial.ca avatar

@mike
The first position is more reasonable: the general liberal position is that people shouldn't be forced into medical interventions, unless there is a serious risk of harm to others. Based upon the different risks, Ontario doesn't let children go to school unless they've gotten a measles shot, but flu shots are voluntary.

Here comes a thread on light pollution from satellites, with a concrete action that you all can take to help push for regulation of satellites in orbit!

Astronomers have been worried about light pollution from satellites (if you've been following me for more than 24 hours, you've perhaps heard a bit about this). Astronomers spent SO much time and effort begging and pleading with Starlink to make their satellites fainter, with mixed results.
