#China#BYD#EVs#USA: "“The Western markets did not democratize EVs. They gentrified EVs,” said Bill Russo, the founder of the Automobility Ltd. consultancy in Shanghai. “And when you gentrify, you limit the size of the market. China is all about democratizing EVs, and that’s what will ultimately lead Chinese companies to be successful as they go global.”
Inside a huge garage in an industrial area west of Detroit, a company called Caresoft Global tore apart a Seagull that its China office purchased and shipped to the U.S.
Company President Terry Woychowski, a former chief engineer on General Motors’ big pickup trucks, said the car is a “clarion call” for the U.S. auto industry, which is years behind China in designing low-cost EVs.
After the teardown, Woychowski, who has been in the auto business for 45 years, said he was left wondering if U.S. automakers can adjust. “Things will have to change in some radical ways in order to be able to compete,” he said."
Some thoughts on Tesla: Most of the rhetoric seems to be about blaming Musk for everything. While he is the source of many of the problems, it ignores the fundamental reality of the BEV market: Almost no one makes money in BEVs. And the ones that do, like BYD, have been revealed to be subsidized out the wazoo.
In reality, desperate cutting of everything expensive has been the only real option. A “sane” CEO would do the same, or run up huge losses otherwise.
Vanessa Lisa Oelmann twittert von der Bejing International Autoshow. Während insbesondere die Stände von #BYD und #Xiaomi völlig überlaufen sind, kann sie sich bei #VW entspannen. Niemand will diese Fahrzeuge sehen. Wie @isotopp immer mal wieder feststellt, werden die nächsten Jahre sehr hart für VW.
"The BYD Group of China has recently announced its entry into the passenger vehicle market in Pakistan in collaboration with Mega Conglomerate Pvt Ltd, the parent company of Hub Power and Haleeb Foods."
The only reason why BEVs exist in significant numbers at all is due to truly vast amounts of subsidies. I don't think people fully realize how much it is. It's more than any other technology by a huge margin.
“The rise of the Chinese EV industry has been enabled not only by generous government subsidies but also by profound changes in strategy and organization, and in particular by a distinctive revival of vertical integration—at both individual firm and national levels. The approach is perfectly exemplified by BYD, which has sought to bring virtually all aspects of the value chain under its control.”
On Wednesday mornings I have to take my son to a 2 hour course, and work nearby until he's finished. This morning I'm trying out using the back seat of the car as my mobile office instead of loitering in the nearby cafe. It's not bad. Airconditioning (under my control), sound system (also under my control), a 60W USB-C PD port to power my laptop, cupholders for my coffee, and a pleasant view outside. The main problem is that hotspotting off my phone is murdering my mobile data quota, but I'd have that problem in the cafe too (no WiFi).
A couple months in and I'm still really happy with the BYD Seal. The switch to electric has turned out to be really easy. This has probably been helped by choosing an EV that is, from a driver's perspective, very conventional (A separate driver's instruments display! Indicator stalks! Physical buttons!) but it is also reflective of the fact that electric cars are now mature tech, with more than enough range for most people's needs. In fact I think that for most people electric cars are already better overall. Better to ride in (quieter, roomier cabins) and better to drive (smooth, instant and abundant acceleration). The main issues are the still higher costs and access to home charging for renters and residents of units, but both of those are becoming less of a problem over time.
"Under the revised final regulation expected to be made public as soon as next month, the EPA will slow the pace of its proposed yearly #emissions requirements through 2030. The new pace is expected to result in #EVs accounting for less than 60% of total vehicles produced by 2030, the sources said."
"At $US15,000, #BYD’s new #Qin EV is already being touted as a “Corolla killer”, as the world’s second largest EV maker continues to disrupt the global auto market."
It's perhaps less a killer than a successor: The Toyota Corolla (and the Honda Civic) showed up among the lumbering American 1970s road boats the way Indonesian spices finally brought some taste to Dutch food in the 1600s.
Design? Acceptable outerior design. Poser-blinker-lights (#Kirmesblinker)! Interior design was obviously done when design department was on vacation.
Digital? Total fail. Center display is an Android phone on steroids. Crapy design and menus.
Driving? Feels like on a swing boat. Recuperation? No one-pedal-drive. Car behaves like a car with automatic gearbox.
Finishing? Excellent!
Conclusion: Nice car for elderly people transitioning from a combustion engine.
