McDonald’s reported $1.9B in Q1 profits yet is 2nd only to Walmart on employees who receive welfare.

This class warfare against working people is another reminder that the USA isn't $34T in debt because the poor rely too much on welfare & pay too little tax—but because billionaires pay too little tax & rely too much on corporate welfare.

OrionKidder,
@OrionKidder@mas.to avatar

@QasimRashid And to be clear, McDonald's & Walmart are viciously anti-union and crushingly exploitative because they know that WORKERS GENERATE ALL THE WEALTH. Managers do some work, and owners are useless. The pandemic made that extremely clear, although it was always true.

It's vital to the owners' continued power and status to keep the people who actually make all the money from being able to organize against them and create something equitable and just.

What you need to understand if you want to create a newbie, non-technical friendly distro in 2024 is that you have to include uBlock Origin and some other extensions in Firefox which makes the web usable, by default!

Because, as @molly0xfff says in the latest Citation Needed, adblockers are no longer optional. So people shouldn't have to know to install it themselves after they've already installed the OS.

OrionKidder,
@OrionKidder@mas.to avatar

@forteller @molly0xfff This is smart! I'm such a newbie, and the first thing I do when I install a browser is Adblock. Considering how much of our time we spend on the web, a new user could be very impressed by a web that's magically ad-free.

Or course, I think anyone who's decided to make that switch is probably like me and already knows. :)

after many Black people who had nowhere to go, were charged rents by their former plantation owners if they didn't leave. if they didn't pay, they were either re-enslaved thru prison OR indentured into financial servitude.

when the numbers of indentured Black servants weren't enough, that's when poor migrant workers became key to this new form of renter slavery.

this is what GOP fascists want to bring back with &

@DrALJONES This is consistent with reports that the most violent language came from-off campus, and it's 100% consistent with who the cops do and don't defend. Let's see how the story unfolds.

A minor point but they're driving me batty with that "threatening environment for our Jewish students and faculty" shit.

What about the many Jewish students and faculty who support these protests?

It's antisemitic AF to assume that American Jews are loyal to #israel and its far-right government.

#gazaprotests

https://communications.news.columbia.edu/news/campus-updates

OrionKidder,
@OrionKidder@mas.to avatar

@richard_merren @JoshuaHolland The two on-the-ground descriptions I've heard of the protest camps by Jews--one student and one journalist--have said, actually no, the protests have been really careful about not doing anything antisemitic. That's not to say it hasn't happened, but it is to say that a) if we report on the instances of antisemitism and don't report on how stringent most groups have been to not allow that shit, then we're misrepresenting the situation.

OrionKidder,
@OrionKidder@mas.to avatar

@richard_merren @JoshuaHolland And b) "feeling threatened" isn't it the same as being in danger. The student experience I read--and I wish I had a link for you!--described exactly how he "felt threatened" by a protest chant until he realized it wasn't actually about him. It was about Israel's actions, and he as Jewish person ≠ Israel's government or military.

I’ve seen a number of folks get excited about contributing to since , and that’s amazing!

My advice: pace yourself, and start small. Give yourself a long runway, and if you don’t contribute at the level you were hoping, don’t count that as a failure, and don’t beat yourself up over it.

It’s easy to burn out quickly if your expectation is to jump head-first into open source. Every contribution, no matter how tiny you perceive it, is a success.

OrionKidder,
@OrionKidder@mas.to avatar

@ramsey Seconded. And if you're not a programmer (hi!), being part of discussion and talking about UX counts as contributing.

@GottaLaff Welcome! It's a little less fucked up here. As always, we are several years behind whatever America is doing.

Part of the mutual aid activism training I did with many new activists, over 3 decades, sometimes solo teach-ins & sometimes collab teach-ins - always included training several folks to work in relay teams to spot/document possible state agents/agent provocateurs & how to kettle & remove them from crowded protests & active large blockades. It's ESSENTIAL proactive training. There's always state agents & also right wingnuts who try to infiltrate big activist movements.

OrionKidder,
@OrionKidder@mas.to avatar

@msquebanh My dad loves telling the story of organizing the Gastown smoke-in, which turned into the gastown riot when the cops started a riot. There was a guy in their cell called "Sharky" who they made for a VPD officer immediately, so they had fake meetings for Sharky and real meetings for the real event. Then, on the day, told Sharky to fuck off and they'd filled him with disinformation for weeks. Ha ha ha ha.

OrionKidder,
@OrionKidder@mas.to avatar

@msquebanh Oh yeah! VPD loves a good riot. They try to crack skulls, blame it on other people, and then strut around like heroes.

OrionKidder,
@OrionKidder@mas.to avatar

@msquebanh Oh hell yes. Pickton was able to do so much damage because VPD is actively hostile to women, indigenous people, or sex workers. That's at least half in their heads.

OrionKidder,
@OrionKidder@mas.to avatar

@msquebanh It's shocking how much they hate people feeding each other.

OrionKidder,
@OrionKidder@mas.to avatar

@msquebanh Ha. Did that actually stop them?!

The weird part is... why can't people feed people? You're not selling food. It's not a business. You're sharing food. It's the most basic human thing there is.

OrionKidder,
@OrionKidder@mas.to avatar

@Infoseepage @mrcompletely @bruces I suspect there is a substantial market for people like you, and that might be sustainable. There's also a whole lot of people like me who want less of all that stuff in our moment to moment lives. Like, I really really don't want texts to be in my field of view. If anything, I'm looking for ways to not be reachable in my life. That's why I'm not getting a "smart" watch. So VR/AR might be a very market-splitting product. We'll see!

OrionKidder,
@OrionKidder@mas.to avatar

@Infoseepage @mrcompletely @bruces I can see the appeal. I really can. I would fear that just like cell phones create the illusion just your boss can talk to you 24/7, the like if instant office you describe would create the illusion that you can be tasked with jobs 24/7.

"Hey, I've got an ultra-urgent job for you!"

"It's 3am on New Year's Day."

"You've got your goggles..."

OrionKidder,
@OrionKidder@mas.to avatar

@Infoseepage @mrcompletely @bruces Yes, well said. As long as it's by choice, I'm totally behind you. As a once-and-future union guy, I know that a lot of workers are not in that position, so that's who I'm concerned about. Doesn't mean I want to ban the tech or even discourage others from buying and using it. Just musing about large-scale consequences.
