What’s the scariest Australian animal?
(Set 1/2)

strykeroz,
@strykeroz@mastodon.social avatar

@dgar The Bush Stone-Curlew outside your window that lights up with that bloodcurdling call in the small hours & you jump out of your skin

Or a barn owl murder-shreik in a tree somewhere above your tent

Or an unexpected koala or possum call in the dead of night nearby

I get more scared by non-lethal animals that in the light of day hang about being cute. Sad but true

I would like to stick a coating onto my home office window to reflect infra-red radiation with minimal reduction of visible spectrum light. Does anyone know much about this?

Random internet searches mostly return results for mirror coatings, or broad-spectrum tints. Not quite what I'm after.

strykeroz,
@strykeroz@mastodon.social avatar

@anathema_device @tj We have the same. I didn't realise they stopped it. We have a cracked window I won't be so quick to replace now I know that

We did it as a compromise when doubleglazing quotes came back too wild. I expect DG is still superior especially northfacing windows where direct sunlight hits the glass

Less than 24hrs to go before Fedivision 2024 kicks off!!

So many amazing and talented artists submitting 72 Original songs written specially for Fedivision and we are less than 24 hours away from hearing those submissions and voting for your favourites!

Each entrant was asked to provide a fictional faction to represent in the Fedivision Song Contest. Each of these factions has a four-letter code associated with it which will be your voting code. For example, my fictional faction is Dizzy Corp. and the four letter code is DIZZ.

Everyone who holds a Fediverse account is eligible to vote for three contestants. A full list of Factions represented, along with their four-letter codes is in the thread below.

Voting will be handled by the Fedivision Vote Bot (@vote) and instructions for how to vote are outlined on the profile page of the Vote Bot.

Be sure to follow the and hashtags, and follow the Fedivision @announce channel for updates!

@dgar There's only one choice for me,

Having a 3 character 4 letter voting code. I don't need to know anything more. That's punk as.

Though...that name may contain traces of U2. Hmmm...

Hi experts

This soared high overhead yesterday morning and I'm at a loss for a positive ID. My thoughts are an immature Kite, either Whistling or Brahminy. But I defer to the brains trust here as I'm far from certain

Your thoughts?

A sunny day today, and while I took the chance to mow, the local magpie family decided it was time for some sunbaking

I was initially worried someone had baited them! But they were happy as clams alternating jumping on insects the mower was scaring up, and flopping down like jellyfish, relaxing in the sunshine...

This Buff-banded Rail was foraging on the track up ahead of us

They're famously shy, and remembering that, this one ran to vanish in the tall grass nearby

There's a story here, but I'm not sure what happened

The male Scarlet Honeyeater landed next to a juvenile, but rather than share his spider, appears to shoo the youngster off

What a handsome devil

Highlighted in a patch of dappled light in the otherwise dark forest is the red head and yellow wattle of a male Australian Brush Turkey

The distant look makes him look like he forgot why he came into this room though

The female is mostly brown, and in the foreground. The male is black with a red back (just like it says on the tin), on the branch behind her

Hope you have a good one, wherever you are

Golden Headed Cisticola, not as I'd incorrectly ID'd them Little Grassbirds, seen here...in grass

Backlit by the bright morning sun, a mixed group of finches enjoying grass seeds from grass dripping with dew

Here, the foreground bird is a Red-Browed Finch while out of focus in the back is a Double-Barred Finch

It's treacherous business relocating along a power line when you have giant webbed feet

A male Australasian Darter using wings, tail, and at times the long neck to balance, catching himself with his left foot in a moment

There were plenty of perfectly good and safe trees to choose from here, but sure
