Growing, photographing, and doodling monsters, but in a flowery way. Nature, science, and art are super cool. Generally covered in small animals.

She/they cishet.

Avatar and banner are a drawing of a skull over a purple pitcher plant, with two flowers on either side of the skull, against a pink background with a few sparkles.

Took the wilted canes from last night's ginger harvest, wove them into the bird's cages. They can dry there and become nutritious shred toys. Put a pinch of chickweed near each to entice them to explore (they LOVE chickweed, just like chickens). Now the room is ginger grass scented :). Bonus shot of Sunny eyeing the new green stuff with cautious curiosity.

More of the same in another cage, because this is exciting stuff.
A vivid yellow parakeet with his head lowered, hiding a little under a toy on his perch.

If they ban TikTok, it will be like prohibition. Die hard fans will band together and program speakeasy codes, browser plugins that make it simple to visit sites outside governmental control, the dark web will rise as the new mafia, they will become prosperous enough to buy the politicians, laws will go into place that forbade walking, only dancing. You must record yourself and entertain the masses. Trends will be enforced, failure to comply will result in fines. Madness will ensue.

Today I had a ton of chores to do, so I dug my rocks out and took pictures of some of them. Now I guess I will do the chores, but when I sit down I will play with the photos and post the results in this thread. Will probably add to it every now and again for a while.

This piece makes the hippie part of my soul happy, what with looking like yin and yang on one side. About an inch and a half in diameter, smoky quartz.

A close up of the dividing line, showing light reflecting from the planes inside the quartz.
A close up that focuses on the shadowy side, showing the streaks of light through the darkness.
The other side of the stone, showing shadows engulfing the light. This stone is a drama queen.

See that tiny swirl by the mechanical pencil lead? I think of it as my spiral goddess. A similar shot is in my Redbubble shop, we have a poster sized print over the bed. Always amazes me to see the poster and know how tiny it is. The crystals are often full of wee rainbows, fun to explore with the jewler's loupe. Like the sphere, it makes me happy in my hippie places. I put jelly bellies in it to nibble on them one at a time when I do the savor and enjoy kind of thing.

A shot close enough to show the center of the spiral, while zoomed out enough to show where the shell fossil falls into patterns of scribbles and loops as it falls into the black matrix.
Closer to the center, showing a better view of the crystals. A few dots are scattered that look a little like dead pixels, they are twinkles from rainbows.

I love ammonites. Opalization, interesting patterns and textures, full of surprises as you rotate them in the light. Also fun to knit toys of.

And, of course, a tooth from everyone's favorite giant extinct shark I can't spell without looking up.

A more deeply polished ammonite, with bands of creamy yellow calcite and darker brown aragonite, with some caramel colored bands of mixtures in between.
A megaladon tooth, between three and four inches (7 to 10 cm) long.
A closer look at the monster tooth with more dramatic lighting.

Labradorite is fun to show to people who aren't familiar with stones. Looks like a boring greenish agate type stone until you turn it a bit, then their eyes pop open when the light hits just right. Heard folklore once that it was bits of petrified aurora borealis falling from the sky. Sounds about right.

Also some Moldavite, from a comet that hit the earth and therefore holds cosmic power. It is often fake and made with glass, but I know mine is real 'cause I'm totally enlightened.

Labradorite can also flash blue, even purple, but then people start calling it other names and ascribing even more mysticism, because why not.
The comet bit, or molten glass on sand, glows a green like Superman's worst nightmare. It has long streaks on the sides, and pockmarks at one end, where it looks like tubes of air run through it.
Superman's nightmare from another side.

@jake4480 Thank you :). I found this one at the Gem Faire, most of these are from there, actually. For amazing prices sometimes, I like to show up as soon as the doors open while everyone's still at work and school. Haven't gone in a few years, though. Other traveling gem shows exist.

In hindsight, it was probably a mistake to let them use my teleporter before I worked out all the kinks.

@BobHorowitz My cosmetology mannequin had doodles on her face too. I used to walk home from school carrying her by her hair, then figured out the neighborhood kids would follow me, whispering about the scary lady who likes heads.

A friend of ours "rescued" three terrified baby geckos to give to a guy who said he had a habitat. I said I had a habitat, and convinced him to give them to me. I do. It's my garden. Hope to see y'all around, lil' dudes.

Remembered the time I went into a gardening supply store looking for sustainable soil with no peat, and the dude said, "Why bother, peat is sustainable, they only take a handful."

Thought I'd do a PSA that in order to get to that "handful" of peat, they pull away 6 feet of the bog above, and the mosses grow very slowly. Also, that bog is a huge carbon sink, and it's too hot for that shit right now.

Now I have the birds, I can't use incense or oils to freshen the air, which is a massive bummer for me. I enjoy a nice rose scent. I also had to get rid of the miniature rose, so the birds don't land on it. However, I just pruned my mint and realized I can pinch a few leaves off after dinner to freshen the air a bit after cooking. Bonus, nibbling the mint will help curb my sweets cravings and give me a burst of the scent pleasure I like. I need more herbs. I have a couple, I need all of them.

Christian Nationalist “New Columbia Movement” attacks contraception at annual forced-birth march

Allison Bailey shot this photo of the New Columbia Movement (Christian nationalists) at the big forced-birth march I prefer to call the "March4Death" on Jan 19 in Washington DC. Didn't see it on the day of because I am not on Instagram, someone sent it to me directy.

Here they are attacking contraception, having as predicted moved on from abortion. One trench is taken, the next trench comes under fire.

tippitiwichet,
@tippitiwichet@mastodon.social avatar

@LukefromDC Looks like a bunch of men. Possibly men who want to ensure women are dependent on them so they can treat them badly and still have someone to warm their bed.

Celia is blooming! She's my fav pitcher plant, a weed found in some moss I bought, often does some tequila sunrise colors, thus Celia named after Celia Hodes on Weeds. Now I will be able to self pollinate her, and find clues to her parentage by examining what comes up, as well as maybe get a similar but even more beautiful plant :). I haven't seen a mostly veinless pitcher that produced such color, but I am only a dabbler.

An earlier pic that shows her range of colors. She is currently mostly green, I've had the light low for dormancy for a couple of months.

tippitiwichet,
@tippitiwichet@mastodon.social avatar

Poor Celia is looking scraggly, I divided her and then Romeo the rascal Houdini butt (Pomeranian) ate four of her remaining pitchers. But, she's showing me her flowers will have lots of color, even when her leaves are still green from dormancy :).

Just gave her the sniff test (some Sarracenia flowers smell like cat pee), and she smells sweet, almost rose like :). I can't wait to meet her seedlings.

tippitiwichet,
@tippitiwichet@mastodon.social avatar

Celia has started dropping pollen from her anthers, so I pollinated her and took some celebratory shots with the good camera :).

More on how this flower has designed itself to prevent self pollination, unless some fool like me interferes, found here:

I just finished knitting what is maybe the coolest thing I’ve ever knit: a monarch butterfly hat. I haven’t blocked it yet so it’s still a little wibbly but I was just too excited, I had to try it on!

Awwe, my tiny little micro tomato already wants to bloom. Orange Hat tomato seeds from Baker's Creek.

Closeup of tiny buds.

tippitiwichet,
@tippitiwichet@mastodon.social avatar

@jake4480 Nope. Just a window box and encouraging soil microbial growth.

tippitiwichet,
@tippitiwichet@mastodon.social avatar

@jake4480 Also, I should have mentioned the last time I had these I lost them to spider mites after they fruited for a while. I just realized when I checked the name of the variety, I saw they were determinate. So, it could be that they don't last long after a good harvest. I still have a few mites, but predatory mites seem to be keeping them mostly in check between leaf cleaning sessions.

https://www.thespruce.com/indeterminate-tomato-variety-1403423

tippitiwichet,
@tippitiwichet@mastodon.social avatar

@jake4480 Yeah, I struggled with them after bringing a bunch of plants indoors, tried a couple of organic sprays. Did not help. Thought of lessons in permaculture about diverse ecosystems, started mulching with wild moss to get more variety in microbial life (made it haunted moss for funsies), and then bought the predatory mites. They finally seem to be easing, but time will tell.

ETA - Oh yeah, I wrote a post about my tiny haunted food web. https://tippitiwichet.com/2023/09/23/my-recovery-garden-is-persephones-garden/
