I hereby declare Sir Hans von Hake the patron anti-saint of effective trolling. Hear me out:

So it's the Holy Roman Empire days before the Reformation and the Catholic Church is at its most corrupt. Pope Whatever the 95th stomps the gas on selling indulgences in order to fund building the big ass Saint Peters building in Rome, and also enrich his cronies. One of the lead cronies is this putz named Tetzel, a corrupt priest who comes up into the HRE selling indulgences

Early version of “if the punishment is a fine then it’s not a crime/sin for the super wealthy”
Crime is allowed for the rich for a service charge.
Years ago in the NBA play-offs, it was announced that Karl Malone was going to be fined thousands of dollars for hard fouls. The guys covering the game laughed & said Malone will just drop off his AMEX card at the scorer’s table at the start of the game…

As a young fella just getting into in the late eighties my first impressions of David Sanborn were that he was corny and overly smooth, in an unhip bag I didn't dig with guys like Metheny and the Breckers. Then he blew my fucking mind with the Night Music show and I've respected him ever since. There was almost no really cool weird music on TV in 1988-90 except that show, and man, Night was legit!!! Nick Cave, Bongwater, Pere Ubu, Miles Davis...

@mrcompletely Sanborn was the wonderful host of the show yet I think Hal Willner was the music coordinator…Willner produced many, many, eclectic collaborations over the years and was an early casualty of COVID….
Sanborn did play pretty slick quite often yet blended well with Bowie and many others…imho…

tlmoore,
@tlmoore@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely
Very true!
I think Willner’s work, connections, & inspiration brought the really different musicians together but Sanborn had to direct traffic once they were there & that took great skill, knowledge, energy, & patience…
Sanborn, Wilner, & a few other folks like G.E. Smith had very mainstream jobs, like network T.V., and still took part in more obscure, heady projects.
It reminds me of Bill Graham intentionally booking older blues & jazz artist with new & psychedelic rock.

If you were waiting to buy my in-depth history of and , NeuroTribes, it's now really cheap at Amazon. The New York Times called it "Beautifully told, humanizing, and important." https://a.co/d/fDNysnr

@mrcompletely @stevesilberman
Absolutely agree! A non-fiction book so well researched and written that is as captivating as a novel. NeuroTribes takes a difficult subject that has been clouded with vauge assumptions and shines light upon its history with great clarity, insight, and compassion.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the fascinating connections and interactions of human consciousness.

From a Kathmandu shop now gone

I once had a T-shirt like this from Berkeley in the mid-1980’s…Maybe from Annapurna on Telegraph Ave?

Buddhist, Hindu, and Newar imagery were the first attractions I had of what would later become an ongoing interest/obsession/calling

What started with listening to Ravi Shankar very high in a darkened room as a teenager sparked the motivation & inspirations to travel to India, Nepal, and the Catskill Mts. for teachings with a Tibetan Khenpo…

I’ve been lucky

If you're a fan and/or a fan of early & , you have GOT to watch this 1973 episode of Midnight Special (hosted by Wolfman Jack!) featuring Bowie, Marianne Faithful, The Troggs, Carmen (great band unknown to me) and others.

Phenomenal. I've never heard of this gig, never seen screenshots of it. The outfits are incredible, as is the music.

I wonder if Joni Mitchell's vocal chords are unique the way Franz Liszt's hands were like 3 octaves wide or like Lanz Armstrong's lungs? Or was it his testicle that was unusually something?

@mrcompletely i was lucky to see her Sept. 26th in Nashville. Really interesting performance where dancers interacted with musicians in different improvisational pieces…
It kinda reminded me of a David Byrne production with lots of flowing movement that was somehow both simplistic and elaborate…
I showed up for a great jazz show and it was that and much more…🙏🏼

One problem, it is next weekend.

@mrcompletely @arghdos A while back while waiting for new Deadcasts w/Jessie Jarnow, I started listening to The Empire podcast with William Dalrymple & Anita Anand and they do a great job working through some very troubling histories of empires rising and falling…
They began with the story of The East India Company and British rule in India and moved on to the Ottomans. Fascinating stuff if you’re interested in that kind of thing…

So after seeing Shakti50, I checked out this book through the Nashville Public Library Interlibrary Loan -the book came from Lincoln, Nebraska.
An incredibly wonderful book of long interviews conducted over several sessions with Zakir Hussain.
A quick read that was slowed by Google searches of the many Indian musicians he mentions throughout…
There is, as always, inevitably it seems, a new mystery that has arisen along with the information gleamed:
On p.67 it states that he played 2/22/70

@tlmoore@heads.social avatar

When searching 2/22/70 at The Fillmore in SF, A show with Delaney & Bonnie & Friends w/Eric Clapton with opening acts The New York Rock and Roll Ensemble and Golden Earring…
Can’t find a listing for a Ravi Shankar show on that date…
Zakir Hussain played a tour with him, and then played The Family Dog in May 1970 that became a release from Bear’s Sonic Journals, but I can’t track down the show mentioned in the book…

Quote from Zakir Hussain

tlmoore,
@tlmoore@heads.social avatar

I tracked down a listing for 2/22/1970 through a program for the performance on sale…
It seems the performance was at The Fillmore East in NYC and not The Fillmore West in SF.
A pretty easy mistake or typo to make, I suppose.
Even Bill Graham wore two wrist watches set to NYC & SF times to keep track of both of his East Coast and West Coast venues.
It is just my obsessive mind that becomes jangled with obscure “facts”
My deepest respect to all historians of music…🙏🏼

I am a Mickey Hart Respecter so big ups to the man on his birthday. While my favorite extended period of music is the (second) single-drummer era of 1972-74 that was without him, I also love his contributions over the life of the band and equally his solo career output. My favorite of his side albums is the magnificent oddity Däfos with Airto Moreira and Flora Purim. I won't even bother linking to a streaming version. It should only be heard on vinyl or lossless digital (CD/FLAC)

tlmoore,
@tlmoore@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely @Conville Most definitely! If a second set restroom break was going to be necessary, I would time it to get back in time before drums/space started.
A little too much info perhaps, but I didn’t want to miss that part.
Some nights had more energy and intensity than others but always a fun place to get lost and found
Mickey Hart’s beam was a great head check, and gut check, too, for that matter…
Loved “The Wheel” post space.
“Throwing Stones/NFA” happened a lot…😊

I saw Scofield in Nashville w/Shakti50 and saw Bela with Zakir Hussain in May…Bela will be with the Nashville Symphony on opening night Saturday playing Gershwin…
I moved back to Nashville in the early 1990’s and have seen Bela in a lot of different venues with a lot of line-ups, many times with the Flecktones…He is way up on the list of musicians I have seen the most times and his musical range is enormous…He is absolutely fearless on the banjo…imho…

Back in the day in Nashville, The Flecktones were everywhere all the time for a while it seems and the Wooten family is pretty legendary in the area, but it was when I heard Bela play in wildly different styles and genres that I began to truly appreciate him…
The Flecktones are a lot of fun and great for some musical acrobatics but the shows have kind of a “sameness” after a while, which is not a bad thing sometimes, like some traditional bluegrass…

@bourgwick Some really funny/scary stories have surfaced from that gig. Hells Angels taking control of a boat cruising around Manhattan for a party with Jerry Garcia & Bo Diddley sounds like a fever dream before dawn that you have trouble piecing together the next morning and seems rather strange and audacious when remembered.
“They’re really good in all the violent spaces.” -a filmed quote that could be shown split screen with footage of speaking with Michael Shrieve after landing at Altamont😊
