@RickiTarr they should have kindness, empathy, and patience for the people around them, but zero tolerance for bigots and neo-Nazis.

Why do so many people treat Excel as a database? 🤔

trechnex,
@trechnex@social.trechnex.com avatar

@nixCraft because technically you can use any modern spreadsheet program to perform the same functions as a personal database (eg. filtering tables, generating reports, organising data, searching for records, etc)

It's a good thing that people don't have to learn Microsoft Access or LibreOffice Base to do that imho. 🙂

This idea that using spreadsheets as a database is a "noob" thing to do probably should have went away about 10-15 years ago.

What cracks me up is when you go to a restaurant, and they ask if you've been there before, and then they say, "Well, we do things a little different here", and then it's exactly like every other restaurant, but more expensive.

trechnex,
@trechnex@social.trechnex.com avatar

@RickiTarr then you go to somewhere that does do things differently, and they do something ridiculous like putting your steak in a mason jar and giving you a ladle to eat it with.

It was the year 2024, and Skynet took control.

Fortunately it was powered by ChatGPT, so instead of firing nukes and destroying humanity, it produced a spicy poem about the futility of war as written by Mr Bean, and then apologised for not understanding follow-up questions.

It was finally defeated by John Connor, who checkmated Skynet by asking for same-sex dating advice.

Electoral Commission in the UK saying photo ID requirement didn’t cause major problems. Be that as it may, for two years running now the local Conservatives have been lying about requirements on its leaflets. Warned last year. Did the same this year. So if ID requirements are to continue, the commission needs to be much better at comms and much tougher on parties that provide inaccurate information. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/live/2024/may/02/local-elections-2024-latest-results-live-tory-conservative-labour-lib-dem-green-south-blackpool-mayor-london-west-midlands-tees-valley?page=with:block-66349fc78f08f2f07401a1b2#block-66349fc78f08f2f07401a1b2

@craiggrannell @bardi personally I’m hoping it turns out to be a “hoisted by own petard” moment for the Tories, where a large contingent of their voters who routinely ignore government advice and flip their lid about mild inconveniences also forget their photo ID, and are so aggrieved by the experience that they never vote for the Tories again.

I can't help but thinking this is more a case of fix your own shit. Rather than bitching about mastodon.

Pretty much any website beyond some self hosted personal blog should have no issues with the number of requests being talked about here...

Maybe if someone like @cstross was to be posting the link. That might be legit breaking. But for most mortals. It shouldn't be.

@fkamiah17 @MadeyeTheCarnaptious I raised an eyebrow at that as well.

There’s been more than a few newspaper articles with him “looking concerned”, and one newspaper made him look like he was shakily taking a drink of water to calm his nerves, when he was probably just taking a sip at an earlier press conference. 😂

@RickiTarr tbh there's probably zero chance that anybody's pronouncing the Old English correctly because those sentences are probably a rough approximation of what used to be a runic alphabet with letters that made entirely different noises.

Advisors: “Please don’t say that when you visit the area. That probably isn’t true & it’ll offend the locals.”

Whichever 20th century UK government minister decided that dentistry should be a separate form of healthcare urgently needs their grave to be pissed on. 😬

Fortunately I don't need any urgent work done myself, but I also can't get an NHS dentist. My employer will reimburse dental care through a salary sacrifice scheme, but that requires me to a) find a private dentist, b) ensure they aren't shite, & c) have money up-front to pay for initial checkup & hygienist visit. 🤦🏻‍♂️

A few weeks back I encountered a FOSS guy here explaining that when he sees open source devs ask for money, he blocks them and then stops using their code because they're morally wrong and he only wants to work with tools made by people who are doing the work for the right reasons. (I'm paraphrasing to avoid indexing the post.)

I've resisted writing about it because I'm slammed, but the question I can't shake is: Who benefits from the ideology of "pure" volunteerism?

trechnex,
@trechnex@social.trechnex.com avatar

@aral @kissane their other "fun" trick, if the project hasn't produced a first release yet, is spreading false allegations of impropriety. That spooks contributors & makes people fear for their jobs, so they end up closing all the donation portals!

One of the understated benefits of Open Collective is that it's handled by a trusted legal source & publishes everything publicly in real time. That eliminates trust as an issue.

Funnily enough, right-leaning white guys are just implicitly trusted.

"RAF shot down Iranian drones heading for Israel, Sunak confirms."

So the RAF is now in combat defending ISRAEL against Iran, which is responding to Israel destroying Iran's consulate in Damascus.

This is what the Tories and "Labour" define as the "defence of the realm".

Any questions?

#IranConsulateAttack #IsraelWarCrimes #StopArmsSalesToIsrael

trechnex,
@trechnex@social.trechnex.com avatar

@fkamiah17 @MadeyeTheCarnaptious technically no. Requiring a vote before action not related to self-defence is a convention that started with David Cameron, who had to climb down after losing a vote about creating a no-fly zone over Syria during the Arab spring.

Before that the government just declared war with privy council powers, briefed the opposition, then made a statement in parliament.

That’s how Tony Blair managed to declare war on Iraq despite massive opposition at the time.

trechnex,
@trechnex@social.trechnex.com avatar

@fkamiah17 @MadeyeTheCarnaptious yeah, having looked it up you’re right. Iraq war was actually the first example in modern times of UK government seeking parliamentary approval beforehand.

I think my view of it is coloured by the fact it was later found to be based on a faulty premise, and I was very much against it at the time. So I wrongly assumed that Blair must have forced through his illegal war. 😂

...and here's the reason why they were doing it: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/apr/08/mps-propose-decriminalising-abortion-up-to-24-weeks-england-wales-stella-creasy

In summary, abortion is currently illegal in England & Wales unless the pregnancy is less than 24 weeks and two doctors agree that it should proceed. In practice, GPs normally wave it through unless there's a really compelling medical reason not to.

Two proposals are going to a free vote in parliament. One fully decriminalises abortions up to 24 weeks, and the other removes the criminal offence entirely.

trechnex,
@trechnex@social.trechnex.com avatar

@mina I'm not particularly clued up on this, but from what I understand there are certain medical tests that can't be performed to check the viability of a foetus until ~20 weeks.

So theoretically if the limit was smaller than that would mean more stillbirths and medical complications for the mother.

Apparently the limit used to be 28 weeks, but it was reduced in the early '90s.
