Let's get this @academicchatter moving with a question every academic can chime in on:

What are the top websites/blogs you go to for news of what's going on in your field?

@RickiTarr there was this comic book, Breakfast of the Gods, with all of those characters...

I haven’t encountered a single vegetable-centered dish at any of the Thai, Japanese, Malaysian restaurants I’ve visited in LA. It is possible to eat differently from the rest of the world (re a conversation a few days ago about always having to order veggies)

(To be clear, I agree everyone should eat veggies if they want! But also that, there are many cuisines which simply aren’t vegetable-centered)

(I had a very large raw papaya salad, lots of fiber but also enough chilli to kill a bear)

@skinnylatte I don't eat potato that often but I do kind of like them? (Maybe I would like it less if I ate it more often). Also a fan of cooked vegetables (not boiled).

This is a final reminder that I'm giving a talk at 6 p.m. tonight about some recent astronomy antics. It is at The Royal Society Te apārangi HQ in Thorndon, and admission is free. There may be lots of pictures of the aurora.

One of the saddest things about leaving Singapore for the U.S. is, not only does McDonalds suck they also don’t have curry sauce. Which makes it impossible for me to eat nuggets

@ricci @jawnsy I've been doing portraits with a6600 35mm prime f/1.8 but it's not quite as good as yours I think. But I don't really do portraits.

va2lam,
@va2lam@mastodon.nz avatar

@jawnsy @ricci oh I actually do also have a TTArtisan 50mm f/1.2 manual focus lens as well. It is actually tricky to get the focus quite right at f/1.2.

I've used the 35mm for street photography evenings/nights because it's not, like, f/3.5-5.6 of the kit 16-50.

va2lam,
@va2lam@mastodon.nz avatar

@dev @ricci @jawnsy changing systems is hard! I also have a Lumix bridge camera but I'm really hopeless doing anything with the settings on it.

One of my classes has their final projects due at 11:59pm tonight and the ramp-up of more and more frantic student emails is really depressing.

They had to choose topics in February and turn in drafts in March, and yet it seems that most of them didn't actually start until today...not that I was any better as an undergrad, but man it hurts to watch!

va2lam,

I remember getting called in for jury duty once and the lawyer was asking us what we did for work just going around the room:

"Bus Driver"
"Teacher"
"Real Estate"
"TV Camera man"

Then they get to this one guy who was in the back, half asleep. "What about you? What do you do?"

"Wa?"
"What do you do for work?"
"I don't know man, I'm like, kinda in to music"

To this day I don't know if he played music... or just like... listened to it.

I don't know if they picked him. They kicked me out.

va2lam,
@va2lam@mastodon.nz avatar

@futurebird the strange thing in NZ is that you actually don't get any questions except if you personally know the people involved (which can happen, since, like, it's NZ). Prosecutor and defense can object to you based on... how you look.

I was going through pictures from my walk from Bondi to Coogee (because news). Here are two pictures of a Great Cormorant (Black shag/māpunga in NZ).

The same black bird, now looking the other way.

The shy dunnock can be seen hopping about under hedges as its other name, 'hedge sparrow', suggests. It inhabits gardens, woodlands, hedgerows and parks.

va2lam,
@va2lam@mastodon.nz avatar

@meganisalanis @JimsPhotos there are allegedly dunnocks in NZ but I've never seen one myself. I did see a bunch of lesser redpolls the other day in Mount Aspiring National Park.

va2lam,
@va2lam@mastodon.nz avatar

@JimsPhotos @meganisalanis I didn't realize that was what I was looking at until I examined the pictures more closely! There were also heaps of yellowhammers.

va2lam,

@JimsPhotos @meganisalanis this is the clearest picture of a redpoll that I have.

So. In a moment of complete madness, I have decided to take only some of my collection of analogue cameras to photograph the next aurora display over Hoopers Inlet. i'll take a Pentax ME Super, A Pentax 6x7, a Canon EOS 3 and also a Tomiyama 6x12. The 35mm will be shooting at ISO 400 and the 120 cameras will shoot Portia 800.
