“Name a force or impulse that threatens the stability of the American political system – distrust in the fairness of elections, conspiracy theorizing, the embrace of authoritarianism – and it is always more prevalent among rural Whites than among those living elsewhere."

Anyone who still thinks that Elon Musk is "just" a spoiled rich white boy tech bro whose political views are, as New York Times tries to tell us, "complicated," needs to read Popular Information's outstanding commentary on his blatant attempt to spread white supremacist disinformation following the choking of Jordan Neely by Daniel Penny on a train in New York.

Musk is a crude out & out white supremacist. And his platform makes him dangerous.

Oliver Willis on how many of us need to wake up and stop pretending that those who are sticking with Trump through thick or thin are being "duped" by him or taken for a ride by Fox News.

They are, Willis thinks, truly malicious people who are energized by the cruelty and hatred of minorities:

"Republican voters love it."

Steven Beschloss asks readers what they hear when Mike Johnson tells us he has been "ordained" by God to be House Speaker — and what this portends for the future. Johnson announced in his first statements after being made Speaker that God had "ordained" him for this office.

I hear theocracy. And hubris. And self-righteous arrogance. And total lack of respect for democracy and the vibrant pluralism of American democracy.

As the year turns, it seems time to issue a warning about the game some people who are not operating in good faith will be playing on social media — especially as the 2024 US election approaches.

It's not uncommon for people posturing as "concerned"/"liberal"/"progressive" to come to social media feed of folks ACTUALLY trying to further progressive ends, with the intent of lobbing bombs into progressive conversations.

“'I am in shock that a lawyer stood in the U.S. Supreme Court and said that a president could assassinate his political opponent and it would be immune as ‘an official act,' lawyer Marc Elias, whose firm defends democratic election laws, wrote today on social media. He added: 'I am in despair that several Justices seemed to think this answer made perfect sense.'”

"Yesterday, former president Trump released a video celebrating state control over abortion; today, a judicial decision in Arizona illuminated just what such state control means. With the federal recognition of the constitutional right to abortion gone since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, old laws left on state books once again are becoming the law of the land."

I posted yesterday a statement from the interview linked below, in which PRRI director Robert P. Jones says that the narrative that evangelicals held their nose and voted for Trump in 2016 and 2020 is incorrect. As he says, there's no evidence to back that narrative, and white evangelicals show robust support for "Trump's anti-immigrant rhetoric and his anti-black rhetoric and all those related racial grievance issues."

Judd Legum reports on the testimony given by mysterious Lanah Burkhardt before the Conroe, Texas, school board. Burkhardt wants books censored, especially Scholastic Books. She claims that reading a Scholastic Book with the phrase "a single kiss" turned her into a porn addict when she was 11 years old.

After hearing her, the Conroe board voted to restrict access to the book she claims made her a porn addict.

"The problem is that Substack hasn’t been letting everyone in. They’ve been drawing lines all along. They do moderate some content — sex worker newsletters, for example — which makes it harder to swallow the argument that the decision to keep hosting newsletters by Nazis (yes — actual Nazis) is grounded in some purist devotion to free speech."

Jeff Brumley highlights a new book by Brian Kaylor and Beau Underwood called Baptizing America, which shows that the problem of fusing Christianity and Americanism into white Christian nationalism goes way beyond white evangelical churches. It has been part and parcel of white Christianity in the US across the board for a long time now, and pointing to white evangelicals as the sole problem lets other white US Christians off the hook.

As I read this eulogy for Twitter by journalists, I think what a tell it is. As the eulogy notes, many journalists have remained devoted to Twitter through thick or thin, to the bitter end.

In doggedly remaining on Twitter, they have shown a shocking lack of solidarity to those made much more vulnerable and susceptible to abuse by Musk's Twitter.

In her usual masterful way as an accomplished historian, Heather Cox Richardson recounts today what led up to the KKK bombing of Sixth Street Baptist church in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1960, and the deaths of four Black girls.

The bombing took place five days after Birmingham schools were integrated. The recognition of equal rights for Black citizens unleashed a torrent of hate that led to monumental acts of violence.

  1. They no longer believe in democracy. They're telling us this right out in the open.

  2. They believe that they, as a minority, should be allowed to dictate to us, the majority.

  3. Many of them back that claim by speaking of "God," who, they assert, has told them they should have authority over us in a theocracy with them in control.

  4. Their leading presidential candidate is saying right out in the open that he intends to dismantle democracy if elected.

For conservatives like Charles Sykes, parallels between 1968 student protests and ones today loom ominously large. What remains constant generation to generation is the fixation of the conservative mind on rebellion, protest, as a threat — chaos is the word that often springs to conservative lips. Let idealistic young people get out of hand, let them raise their voices and hark what discord follows: mere anarchy is loosed on the land.
