The closing date for the UK government's consultation on cyber resilience is Monday. If you are in the UK and know your stuff you should probably respond.

The Cyber Resilience Act is being finalised in the next two weeks, despite the parts that could deeply harm . Rather than suggesting changes to the (plenty of others doing so), here's an article explaining why changes are still necessary despite the 11th hour.

The license change is just the most recent example of a company that no longer needs to drive adoption with claims. I wrote about the phenomenon in 2021 but it's been around for about 20 years. It is not "the end of open source", just a lifecycle stage for a VC funded software startup that was leveraging it.

While F-Droid appears to be "just" an alternative for , it is actually the apex of a lifestyle movement that's choosing to use Android only with and without or advertising-related . Realising that makes many of its features - and shortcomings - easier to understand. I was the main interviewer in the discussion this week on Weekly with core @fdroidorg developer @eighthave and it was a good show.

The @EU_Commission has launched a public consultation on the rules defining the European system (aka regulation 1025). The top-line for me is it completely ignores while making both engagement in standardisation and use of standards very hard for open source community members.

Unsurprisingly, the consultation's survey makes it extremely hard to tell them this! I think @osi will be attaching a letter to its input! The deadline is July 25.

It's time for Europeans to start writing to their MEPs about the Cyber Resilience Act. It has recently been modified in a way that will be very harmful to projects.

This article from Github does a good job explaining the issues. Those first two issues are the ones that have been recently and intentionally introduced. Your MEP probably doesn't know and still thinks open source has been excluded from the scope.

Source-available proprietary software has been delivering its users look-but-don't-touch lock-in since at least 2004 when the Wikipedia page was written. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Source-available_software

It is only appearing popular now because so many businesses have succeeded leveraging open source and now have business pressure to progress to the end of the rights-ratchet. Relicensing old versions on a timer adds nothing if the code is actively developed.
