Hey folks!

Please do NOT report artists for sharing links to where their art is available to purchase!

Just DO NOT be such a jerk!

If you want artists to keep sharing their work on mastodon, this whole "absolute no commercial posts at all" attitude has to stop. There is a huge difference between a big corporate ad campaign and an individual artist posting a link to their own art shop.

Edit/Update: Well, this blew up. I'm muting now, and won't see replies.

@kristinHenry If we want people to move off of corporate social, artists, artisans, sex workers, and so on need to feel like they can still make a living. IF the goal is to get people to move from corporate social, this just has to be acknowledged and we have to find ways to accept that sometimes people might share links or solicit sales.

@kristinHenry
Folks who do this have zero comprehension that commerce and capitalism are not the same damn things.

Willow,

@kristinHenry
Nothing wrong with sharing art. Also nothing wrong with not wanting your feed filled by people using it as a free advertising space. Can't imagine why someone would report it. If you don't want it, block it and don't feel bad about it. Other people might want to see ads, but you don't have to if you don't want to.

@squishymage42@dice.camp avatar

@Willow @kristinHenry But there's a difference between choosing not to follow or muting users who link to where you can buy stuff if you want and reporting them to potentially get them kicked.

mxk,
@mxk@hachyderm.io avatar

@squishymage42 @Willow @kristinHenry there are instances with clear stance regarding advertisement and this should be honored and taken serious.
I honestly never see a problem in reporting, in the end it is a moderation decision based on the rules of the given instance.
We are not on Twitter, where reporting leads to auto block based on heuristics.

@kristinHenry

Where is there a "absolute no commercial posts at all"" rule?

SuperDicq,

@kristinHenry I don't see the issue with commercial entities having fediverse account at all. Banning anything commercial at all feels like anti-capitalism gone way too far.

There are many commercial entities I like following on here, like hardware and software businesses. I also have a fediverse account for my own software business.

SuperDicq,

@kristinHenry Brands on Twitter for example are an issue because they abuse the algorithm and they pay for sponsored posts and get special treatment.

You can't do that on the fediverse. I don't mind brands being here, because here our accounts are all equal.

beeoproblem,
@beeoproblem@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@SuperDicq @kristinHenry I think I'd rather commercial entities have instances than accounts.

This goes under the assumption that Bigcorp's account directly contributes a bunch of traffic (i.e. expense) to whatever instance they have an account on. If Bigcorp ran their own instance then the cost issue is moot and, better still for them, they have full control of who they federate/associate with.

@kristinHenry
IMO there should be a disincentive for abusive reporting. I think there would be nothing wrong with suspending a user for a couple of days who repeatedly has reported an account for no real reason (after a warning is this exists on Mastodon).

@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io avatar

@theseeduneed @kristinHenry on properly moderated instances mods will do this

@kristinHenry
what the actual hell people are actually doing this?

They need to touch some grass

kristinHenry,
@kristinHenry@vis.social avatar

@epicEaston197 yep, and we've already had a report on my post about this.

I'm asking my moderation team to manage that report, since it doesn't seem right for me to process a report on my own post even though I'm admin on this instance :)

@kierkegaank@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@kristinHenry I don’t mind at all when creators advertise their work. If it should bother me I quietly mute and move on. But seeing the poison of especially undisclosed corporate ads spread makes me see red

@fool@mastodon.world avatar

@kristinHenry ads are still ads.

List it in your server rules or work through those reports.

We can then block your entire domain.

What "absolute no commercial posts at all" attitude? I've never seen anyone say that.

annika,
@annika@xoxo.zone avatar

@negative12dollarbill @kristinHenry I've had to remove a handful of spurious reports against people promoting their own work. Consider yourself lucky if it hasn't affected you, I guess.

@kristinHenry

This is a very versatile platform, people make their own feeds. What you can't do is make them for everyone else, which is what a lot of people want.

If you don't like something don't follow it, and block it if it shows up.

I'll bet you can even find a server that doesn't allow any commercial posts at all.

AvonVilla,
@AvonVilla@aus.social avatar

@kristinHenry I saw this post because it is trending, so it was fairly high up on the "Explore" tab in my web client. Presumably it is intended for the vis.social instance, but it seems Mastodon is spreading it all over the place, and it might even appear on servers which have a rule of "absolutely no commercial posts at all". If that is the case, then a person reporting such a post on those servers would not be a jerk. I am on a peertube server which has such a policy and I think it's great to have that option.

I personally think creative expression is usually impaired by any sort of commercial activity and I try to steer clear of it.

annika,
@annika@xoxo.zone avatar

@AvonVilla @kristinHenry You don't have to forward every report to the originating server. Just because the post violates a local policy, doesn't mean you need to bother the remote admin.

lizzard,
@lizzard@social.tchncs.de avatar

@AvonVilla @kristinHenry "I personally think creative expression is usually impaired by any sort of commercial activity and I try to steer clear of it."

Artists who can afford to avoid any sort of commercial activity are either hobbyists or extremely privileged...

kristinHenry,
@kristinHenry@vis.social avatar

@lizzard @AvonVilla exactly! Fine art watercolor paper, alone, is super expensive!

gi124,
@gi124@mastodon.social avatar

@kristinHenry if post is tagged then people who don't want to see it can mute it without having to report...

dalias,
@dalias@hachyderm.io avatar

@gi124 @kristinHenry Or just don't follow them. Short of unwanted replies/tagging, you're responsible for what you see here. Absolutely no excuse for trying to police people who aren't harming anyone.

stevenbodzin,
@stevenbodzin@thepit.social avatar

@kristinHenry and what is wrong with a big corporate ad campaign? If you subscribe to coca cola's feed you should be able to see coca cola ads. It's not like anyone can force you to see them.

The lack of institutions on this network is the biggest thing keeping it from taking off. And many institutions are commercial.

autoerot1ca,
@autoerot1ca@kinky.business avatar

@stevenbodzin @kristinHenry Who wants this platform "to take off"? If taking off is being advertised at in every other toot then f that. All hail any platform that does not see its users as resources to be exploited.

stevenbodzin,
@stevenbodzin@thepit.social avatar

@autoerot1ca @kristinHenry this isn't about exploitation. It's about having a place, any place, where I can find the people all over the world whom I wish to speak with. It is horrible that today the only place I can send a chat message to most of the world's political parties, companies, unions, publicly traded companies, and individuals, is facebook. If you think people should spend more time on facebook, great. I don't.

autoerot1ca,
@autoerot1ca@kinky.business avatar

@stevenbodzin @kristinHenry I think people who want that should stay away from me. I think people who want that should go elsewhere. I think that should not be here. Capisce?
