Really wild Bike n Brew ride tonight. Start at Union Square. Riot cops walk by, going to a Palestine/Israel protest. Then a group of Orthodox anti-Israel types. Meanwhile a big rally for parks. Fire trucks scream onto 17th. We pull out, pass the fire trucks, which then pass us back. Try to go up 6th Ave but for blocks we're in nothing but cop cars, for the Gaza protest. It was the weirdest group ride I've ever been on. Gaza protestors on the sidewalk, us on the street, cops nervous. #bikeNYC

Good morning Blackhawk helicopter. Why do I only see military helicopters in NYC when there is a protest movement going strong?

When people talk about the days of mass media in the form of the evening news, Dan Rather, everyone "on the same page" with wistful longing... I get why. The current landscape is chaotic.

But, that period of more centralized media left a lot of people out. It made certain perspectives impossible to contemplate.

Like during the early days of the Gulf War: the antiwar movement was invisible.

@futurebird true. In 1991, a group I was in, in SF, organized a rally outside a TV station to demand coverage after it decided not to cover a series of 100,000 person marches against the war. It had little impact. People need to understand how much better we have it today.

@lynn to me, this is a very weak argument for the effectiveness of Israel at keeping us safe. It sounds especially bad for someone in the US, where a growing part of the population espouses the idea that we should all go off to Israel and leave the US as a white ethnostate.

@lynn I know you were not saying that. My point is that having a Jewish state has, unfortunately, provided an escape valve for the worst anti-semites to have their way with entire countries, destroying local communities and history. There are many people in the US who want it to be a white, Christian nation. They also tend to be great supporters of Israel. It's more complicated than just wanting to deport us, as there is also Christian eschatology at work.

A Tampa dad has nearly given up after his son who's autism was dropped from MDCD *1 of 460K children in FL.

Chaz, was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder *nonverbal. Peterson said his son tried attending public school, but saw success in ABA therapy, which had been completely covered by MDCD under the Dept of Children & Families during COVID. He'd been attending ABA therapy 5 days a week.

i hate Florida but this is the same BS as people say about NY. Any state that is a major first stop for new immigrants is going to have massive out-migration as people get their feet under them and find opportunities in the interior. This has been true for hundreds of years on the US East Coast

@Iragersh @Alon also because drivers need a view -- this is why he refused to build a lower, cheaper Henry Hudson bridge that would have saved Inwood Hill Park, Van Cortland Park, and the village of Spuyten Duyvil. You can't enter a great city like a rat, scurrying underground! He really said that.

Also recall that NY only has a tunnel because Roosevelt was convinced that a bridge would be a security threat to the Navy Yard

ps i am almost done copying my copy of the audiobook to non DRM MP3 files. Such a relief to be able to listen in the player of my choice. Even one that works! (Unlike the Kobo app lately, which fails to play books but sends thousands of tracking beacons back to its real masters)
