I think I'm still in recovery from learning a few weeks ago that Canadian fossil fuel companies tell people that because it's "natural" gas that they produce, burning it can't hurt the environment. And people believe them. I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night, remember that and 🤯🤯🤯🤯

@helenczerski My favorite thing about natural gas is that it doesn't even have to be burned to hurt the environment. Just having it leak from pipelines into the atmosphere is damaging! And we're leaking so much that it's doing more damage than burning coal was doing.
@helenczerski I'll add more cringe: in Germany gas used to be (or maybe still is) considered as "green energy", so if you rent an appartment or choose a contract with an electrical company and they state "GREEEEN ENERGY!!!", it might be gas actually.
Wait until you find out that "Carbon Footprint" was created by oil industry marketing (BP in 2004) to shift the blame of the environmental impact from the fuel producers to the fuel consumers. A clever tactic to say "It's not our product that is bad it's that you peasants consume too much of it."
@helenczerski@junesim63 Oh, yes, everything "natural" is good, by definition! The fact that a substance has to be extracted from below the land-surface of the Earth, or from under the sea-bed, makes no difference, apparently. If fossil fuel firms were made to call "natural" gas methane instead, people might not be quite so easily conned.
@helenczerski if it's that easy i'm not surprised companies invest in jargon and philosophy to shut down most of the opposition before it builds up steam
