Oddly, I don't feel disgusted about having a robust list of blocked users, communities, and domains on the fediverse. Instead it actually feels like I have some level of control over what I see, rather than say, "suggesting" to YouTube that I don't want to see more neo-nazi propaganda and hoping it actually listens to me.
You know who’s behind the anti-blocking thing you hear all the time? The “But you need to hear both sides!”, “But if you block you’ll be stuck in an echo chamber!”, etc?
Trolls. And assholes. People who are tired of being blocked because they either don’t see how repellent their views are, or they don’t care and want to foist them on others anyway. Or, I guess, in the case of trolls, they know, they care, they want to hurt others.
There is nothing wrong with blocking on a personal level and never has been. Block away!
One of the things I miss about RES is the ability to tag users with my own labels. When I would run into someone with a “ahole 20230830” tag, I knew that on 2023/08/30, I had labeled them as an asshole (in case I wanted to look back at their comment history to see what exactly was so egregious) and their opinions could safely be ignored.
Some of the apps like Connect just let you block the entire instance which is much nicer. Hopefully this becomes standard. It also has keyword filters.
I just hope lemmy by itself will do that soon, its a necessary feature to have that (and yes i know but i also kinda tell those people to suck my jar bottom before blocking)
I get what you mean. With how federation works I feel like instead of subscribing to communities I can almost do the inverse and block the ones I don’t like.
