When people make a joke, and you just happen to know an exception to the joke, there is no need to make a "well actually" post. Yes, we all realise you can use a search engine. Here, have a cookie.

IT'S A JOKE! ENJOY IT!

Example:

Edit: I'm talking about people who argue why the joke is technically wrong rather than enjoying it. I thought that was obvious, but clearly not.

For the record, I understand the urge to "well actually" jokes if you're the pedantic type, like I am too. I have probably done it myself from time to time, and have had it done to me several times.

Just ... don't.

It's very annoying for the person who wrote the post, and it is very annoying for people who read it. It does not make you look smart. It makes you look like an ass.

@veronica Is going s okay if we use the "well, actually" to add a follow-on punchline?

@veronica it's really common for somewhat nerdy people to be like that. it gets on their nerves when someone is wrong on the Internet.

@thor Yeah, both me and my three siblings are like that. Which both my sister's husbands pointed out when we were all gathered at a family thing a couple of weeks ago and all four of us reacted at the same time to something said. 😁

In some contexts it's just smart to just not ...

@veronica another thing nerds will do is say, somewhat arrogantly, "just Google it"

yes, fine, it's good to do some research, but what these nerds are missing is that people sometimes ask you questions as a conversation starter.

"i'm curious about this very smart person. how can i get to know them?"

thor,
@thor@berserker.town avatar

@veronica note that i'm a giant nerd myself, so i speak from experience. it's really easy for nerds to come across as arrogant pricks unintentionally.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@thor Yes, so am I, which is why I'm being blunt about it.

@veronica :troll: Well, actually there are exceptions to this: you can point out extra facts that even add to the joke.

Do I get a cookie now :ablobcatbongo:

veronica,

@mray Ok, agree on this. Adding to a joke is a different matter. I meant people who argue against a joke. A "well actually" generally is an argument.

@veronica 🤓 Well, actually… 🤔 Hey! You've got to give me a way out of this.

(getting certain Monty Python vibes https://redirect.invidious.io/watch?v=ohDB5gbtaEQ 🤗 )
