Warning

I responded to a post on Mastodon yesterday.

A copy of my response ended up in a discussion forum on Kbin.

I had no idea that would happen and discovered it by accident.

It sounds cool that both Kbin and Mastodon can both interoperate through the Fediverse.

I think people should be able to choose if their content gets copied to another site/apps.

There needs to be some obvious visual indicator that will happen so that people can make a choice.

@beforewisdom here on kbin all mastodon posts are pulled in for us to see. we do content organization a bit different (putting things into threads, for example). This post you just made was automatically sorted into our @fediverse magazine and is listed as a "microblog post". The only way to prevent this would be to defederate with kbin (blocking kbin). Otherwise we can see your posts like everyone else on the fediverse can.

"The only way to prevent this would be to defederate with kbin (blocking kbin)."

Is that something that I as just a Mastodon user can do?

@beforewisdom nope. It's on the instance level. The website you're on may allow you to block or hide posts from kbin but I've never used veganism.social so idk if there's an option for that on there.

I have to wonder what the issue is though? Did you have a bad experience? By default all your posts go out to the whole fediverse, kbin included. That's kinda the whole point of federation.

@Otome@kbin.social

If Mark Zuckerberg started farming out Facebook posts to other sites without notification or consent people would be screaming bloody murder.

People expect their content on Site X to stay on Site X.

Having no idea where their comments could end up is a large potential risk ( harassment, stalking etc ) for them.

It isn't very consensual or respectful of users.

I signed up for Mastodon for my content to be on Mastodon, not other places.

@beforewisdom I think you've fundamentally misunderstood the idea of mastodon. It's a site focused on federated microblogging. Federation means that the content is shared with other federated sites. For example, mastodon.social, kbin, and veganism.social can all see this thread, because they are all federated on the same activitypub network. This is an inherent feature of mastodon and kbin. It's literally their core functionality. If you don't like that, you should find a site that doesn't do federation, or one that clearly lists it's federated sites that you feel comfortable with.

@Otome@kbin.social

It is bit like the corporate "you should read the fine print".

Federated social media is extremely new. This isn't something that will occur to most people.

It isn't their fault.

I am going to go find the issue tracker for Mastodon to make some suggestions to the developers about warning people and giving them opt out options.

@beforewisdom yeah I think its just an advertising problem. Mastodon often gets pitched as "an alternative Twitter" without clarifying the federation stuff. On kbin we can disable looking at other site's content but not disable ours from being sent out. On the site/instance level admins can defederate and block other sites. But if you don't want federation at all, then it sounds like you aren't really into the who concept of mastodon and the fediverse in the first place.

phi1997,

@beforewisdom It's not getting copied, it's just your original post being visible on multiple Fediverse instances. That's how federation works. It's how I can see and reply to your post even though we are on different instances. If there was a visual indicator, it would trigger for every post. I think what you're asking for is a checkbox for whether or not you want your post to be federated.
