I'm and I know food preparation is difficult for many folks in the community.

But learning to feed yourself is a skill that has cascading effects (I get severely depressed if I don't feed myself food I like). Not to mention, not everyone has the $$ for takeout

I've been sending this 'sad bastards cookbook' to everyone https://archive.org/details/sad-bastards-last

It focuses on 'boil water and eat' and 'ingredients that don't go bad'

if you like rice it gets even easier. get a $20 rice cooker like this: https://www.amazon.com/Aroma-Housewares-4-Cups-Cooked-ARC-302NG/dp/B0979TYRYN/

get white jasmine rice. pour it into the rice cooker. (no washing needed if you're truly sad like i sometimes am)

add water until water reaches your first knuckle (yes this works even if you have a bigger hand, etc. don't overthink it)

put any kind of leafy vegetable on top of the rice. add soy sauce. garlic powder. tofu is also an option

if you're omnivorous, add any meats.

press the button

@skinnylatte This is how I do it in the instapot. Never fails. If I want a little crunch on the bottom, I give it 4.5 minutes instead of 4. Perfect every time, and I use broth not water. Also delicious.

The instapot is a godsend for “just throw things together” food. Especially with rice in it

@neunkasulle @Lizette603_23 and beans! and rice! a match made in heaven

And because I also have adhd, I love doing little hacky things that trick me into making food even when I don’t want to.

When I feel like I don’t want to make food, but end up doing it (even something small), I pay myself $20 in a savings account I can’t touch.

It’s the money I would have spent on take out. Even with little memos like ‘the pizza I didn’t get..’ it just makes me laugh. Anyway I have more savings now!

@skinnylatte this was (one way) how I saved up money to quit my job and build apps once upon a time <3

NickGates,

@skinnylatte okay but knowing your hacks would definitely help me at my financial counselor job. Literally everyone including me spends too much on takeout and fast food.

skinnylatte,
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

@NickGates for me, learning how my brain works has been crucial.

  1. if i'm really starving and hangry, eat a banana before i order food. give myself 10 min then ask, 'do i really still want that?'

  2. try to imagine whether that food i'm ordering will really bring me joy

  3. i know that i'm simply not the person who enjoys or wants to do food prep (or wants to eat meals from meal prep) so i just give myself space to not do that. i have a few nice convenient things i make nicer, so that helps

@skinnylatte speaking of omnivorous, I put in chunks of chicken thighs the other night, with minced onion and garlic....whoa, good. Only took an extra 2 minutes

skinnylatte,
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

@Lizette603_23 only very slightly more steps: https://youtu.be/5Zdklg2CgPk

i'm from singapore, and living outside singapore means 'chicken rice at restaurants mostly sucks' and this is gets me 80% there

@skinnylatte I'm sure you have many recipes I would like to know about!!! Thank you.

@skinnylatte We use this same method in our parts. Never fails. I don't count the number of whistles, 8 Mins 30 seconds always works - the rice is not fluffy, of course.

tokensane,

@skinnylatte
We use one of these. It goes in the microwave so you don't need a separate appliance. They come in various sizes, and I expect that other brands are available.

The double lid system lets it vent steam without boiling over. Works really well.

@tokensane i have one of these too. i have multiple rice-cooking appliances! i like them as well

you can also do the same thing (add leafy veg and protein) in these, i do that sometimes

@skinnylatte might get hounded for shilling the mlm but getting a thermomix was a life saver in terms of cooking skills for me. step by step instructions. good recipes. makes cooking alot less stressful. especially with the easier recipes theres a 0% chance of messing up

@skinnylatte I'm so picky about food for a lot of reasons One of them is my gut issue the other is that I have to take of my body in a special way because I am an opera singer

But one thing when I am in shape to cook for myself that is really nice is that I save so much money doing so that I can spend a lot of that money on higher end food

@skinnylatte An autistic friend of mine used to always order takeout, but had some financial difficulties last year - so she wanted to reduce food costs.

After she requested it, I started to share the receipts for my grocery shopping with her, which she says was tremendously useful for her by showing her options for saving money. Now she cooks for herself more often than not.

@skinnylatte following after this post 😂

I've enjoyed quite a few posts of yours, so I'd say it's about time I followed!

I cannot stop chuckling at both the title and subtitle. "Food you can make so you don't die."

And seriously, thanks for this. It's noon where I'm at, and I haven't eaten yet. I'm getting up now, and I'm going to do the rice cooker thing you suggested (with my Instant Pot!)

Since you are a lot more serious cook that I am, any thoughts on this one?

The New York Times Cooking No-Recipe Recipes: [A Cookbook] https://a.co/d/24DjDRb

It seems like a handy thing for me, who knows enough basic cooking to work from rough ideas

skinnylatte,
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

@neunkasulle mark bittman’s how to cook everything is what I started with. There’s a veg version of that book too

neunkasulle,
@neunkasulle@chaos.social avatar

@skinnylatte
The vegetarian version I definitely going to check out! I noticed the last ~4 years cooking vegan food, that the usual basics do not always apply the same way, which can make it challenging to adapt along the way.
(I grew up with/leaning eastern european cooking and going vegan is definitely a challenge from there)

skinnylatte,
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

@neunkasulle check out Refika’s kitchen on YouTube, Turkish food is very veg friendly and she has wonderful and easy recipes

skinnylatte,
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

@neunkasulle pretty good, personally for me sam sifton's cooking is not diverse enough so i wouldn't use something like that, but he has a good handle on the 'classics' and how most people might want to eat

@Lizette603_23@mastodon.social avatar
