Alright, it looks like #Bluesky is becoming Normie Mastodon, so I’ll have to actually use that account. I’m not leaving this place but I would like a good bridge, which I think already is in the works but does anyone have any details for people that might want to cross post?
@Scubadiver it means more casual and less ideologically driven users are there. Some celebrities are there. Memes are there. It’s not any better, although they actually have quote tweets, it’s just a more smooth onboarding experience for people who were either overwhelmed by Mastodon or who signed up, couldn’t find anyone who wanted to talk about stuff other than the Fediverse and then stopped using it.
@film_girl micro.blog enabled support. Part of me wants to just do that instead, but I feel it is confusing with all the protocol cross pollination/interaction, heh
@davidgarywood don’t blame you. That’s why I want a nice bridge. But we’ll see. Like I said, I’m not leaving here but I’m not going to deny the normies either
@kevinlovestech that’s an apt description so far. I think the choosing a server aspect of Mastodon is the biggest barrier to entry, tbh. I know it doesn’t feel like it is, but it is. The apps are now good enough but the barrier to even signing up is just too much for a lot of people.
@film_girl@danvpeterson No question. That's very clear. I feel very strongly about the benefits of the fediverse, but there'are reasons Twitter hit critical mass.
@danvpeterson@film_girl The fact it defaults to mastodon.social is a problem and a slap in the face to other instances. It's an appeal to normal people, but it hurts the ecosystem.
@pmb@dmoren the approach to search is different. The approach to changing domain names and I guess potentially, instances, is better. It’s more centralized right now, even tho it is also a protocol, and there’s a lot of value in that.
@Jdreben the protocol is. Bluesky is still one server and still invite-only b/c are waiting to get the full moderation stuff in place before they go full decentralized, which I’m perfectly fine with. I don’t think opening it up for other nodes works until you have your core baselines figured out.
