Brave is catching up to Google and Microsoft's Bing with the launch of Answers with AI, a tool included in its search engine.

The differences? Brave promotes privacy and says its tool doesn't use Big Tech search tech.

New Blog Post: After a few days of digesting the news, I offer my analysis on @Flipboard's move into the Fediverse and support for ActivityPub.

I remain firm that this is a significant evolution for the platform. It wants to be a part of the federated web's content DNA.

After speaking with @mike over the years, this progression feels natural for the company, helping people aid in content discovery.

Hello Fediverse!

I'm excited to let you know that we have stood up our very own instance. This is so cool. We've posted all the videos for my Dot Social podcast. We also posted our original Flipboard launch video for fun.

You can check out our PeerTube instance here:

I'm super impressed with PeerTube. It's quite a capable platform and it is fully federated via ActivityPub.

@mike @dot_social inquiring minds want to know who Luigi is??

thekenyeung, to random
@thekenyeung@mastodon.social avatar

Had some time to think about this more. Today's @Flipboard news is substantial and I can't wait for this ActivityPub integration to become widely available, especially for publishers and content creators.

I should write more about this in a blog post, but wanted to plop down some quick thoughts.

As @mike pointed out, it's a break down of the walled garden of content. This hopefully creates greater exposure/promotion of Magazines, and maybe even Storyboards.

thekenyeung,
@thekenyeung@mastodon.social avatar

@Flipboard's ActivityPub push evolves the platform away from being an app-centric service to something almost akin to being on a higher plane.

Okay, admittedly that sounds prophetic and like its vaporware, but Flipboard has spent the past decade showing curation works, but now it's redefining that for a social world that really has seen massive upheaval. This ain't your 2000s social.

It presents a great opp for publisher's audience development teams too (cont'd).

https://medium.com/@mmccue/flipboard-begins-to-federate-4a80d6bdc209

thekenyeung,
@thekenyeung@mastodon.social avatar

For publishers, @Flipboard's ActivityPub deal could let them take published content, flip it into Magazines, and then have it be pushed to their fediverse-supported apps.

I'd hope that Flipboard would have flip comments be the social post and the article be embedded link. And it'd be great if there was some tie-in back to Flipboard's Magazine to encourage growth. I guess @Techmeme's tweets pre-Elon is a great example.

And since Flipboard is pro-publisher, traffic goes to the news sites.

thekenyeung,
@thekenyeung@mastodon.social avatar

Both @mike and the team at @Flipboard are smart but I hope they haven't underestimated the effort needed to manage moderation and doing community. 🤞

And looking at the work the company has done in the fediverse as a whole, it laid the foundation for this next big bet—less of a gamble and more pioneering. Flipboard becomes a first mover in defining content distribution in the decentralized world.

Mike sets the right expectations in his blog post: There will be problems and issues to sort out.

thekenyeung,
@thekenyeung@mastodon.social avatar

People seem to appreciate the many editorial desks that @Flipboard launched on its own Mastodon instance (kudos to the editorial team!). The lessons the team learned likely played a big role in the ActivityPub news.

The problem with traditional social with Flipboard IMO was that you had to avoid spamming people from this many channel. Through AP, content creators/curators can do it themselves while better thing in Flipboard into their workflow.

Much more to write later but think it's good for @Flipboard to take a bit of a victory lap right now 👏👏👏

But before I go, some disclosures:

  • I used to work at Flipboard on the editorial team but have no insights into today's news
  • I've been covering the company for nearly 10 years as a reporter and blogger
  • I hold some equity in the company, but remain a long-term user and fan of the app

@Flipboard @ricmac Richard, I think much of the BTS mechanics will be revealed by Flipboard next year.

However, IMO for indie pubs, you could set up an RSS feed for your site to auto pipe content into a Flipboard Magazine based on post tag. Then, through the magic of ActivityPub, it'll be syndicated via your Flipboard federated account.

My high-level POV: Streamlines distribution work for pubs, offers more promotion opps, and grants more visibility to your Flipboard channels/

I love the way features are done by the @verge.

It's a great exploration into innovation in all forms, not just specifically technology. And the layouts are chef's kiss

Take this one, for example: @seanhollister looks at how LEGO builds a new LEGO set, such as the classic rainbow stripe Polaroid OneStep SX-70 instant camera.

Oh yeah, and @vjeran_pavic for the piece ain't bad either.
