If you're here from Reddiit, please remember to use the boost link in the post rather than the Upvote button, as the Upvote is meaningless to a user's reputation.
Lemmy doesn't currently have a boost button. Boosts are literally Mastodon's version of a retweet button and since kbin is more compatible with mastodon than lemmy is atm, kbin users have one too.
Unfortunately, incorporating Mastodon's system on a standard forum hasn't panned out quite well -- people are WAY more likely to downvote something than they ever are to reblog it, causing perfectly civil users to have a -400 karma balance. The kbin dev has already acknowledged that it's unbalancing things a bit, so hopefully that should be handled when he gets through the 900 other things. Until then, upvotes on Lemmy I assume are normal, but upvotes on kbin's side are literally just for looks.
Welcome, btw. It takes a while to get used to things here, but I hope you aren't finding things too difficult :)
for Lemmy users there doesn't seem to be a running, total tally the way there is on Reddit.
To be honest with you, I would rather kbin's karma be handled in the same manner that lemmy handles it. I see no reason for it outside of sorting. Communities could lock the ability to post behind a minimum karma like reddit did, but nobody can really pretend bots won't just get around the limit by reposting a single picture of a cat.
I sense by far what having a visible reputation on a user's profile is going to lead to is just a bunch of karma farming. The low-effort reposts, mindlessly repeated one-liners, and constant bitchy one-upmanship are all things I'd be very glad to leave behind me forever. I didn't even realize how bad it had gotten til I left, and now whenever I end up back on reddit for something, the whole thing just makes me tired. I seem to have been a frog, boiling alive in mean little shitposts.
Any way to click through to the linked site from the Threads page? For example, I see the translate.codeberg.org and codeberg.org posts on kbinMeta but I have to go through the comments to click the original link?
What is a "reputation point"? It seems to work differently than other forums I've seen in that it only counts downvotes, is that how it worked on Reddit? I never had an account there, apologies.
How can you block a whole domain? I’m seeing a lot of NSFW posts from one Lemmy instance that aren’t being flagged as such. I could block the Magazine, but I would like to block the whole instance outright.
Side note, it is kinda annoying that you have to go inside the Magazine to block it.
@asteroidrainfall no way to block individual instances just yet. you can hide all federated content (in the sidebar there's an option). and you can block magazines/communities.
Is there a way to convert a link to a post on another instance, into a Kbin link to the same post?
Basically, imagine someone links me to a post on Lemmy.ml or Beehaw.org, and I wish to reply to it but from my kbin.social account. What's the easiest way to do that?
As a feature of the site itself, it will be limited and cumbersome. The current way Mastodon and Lemmy are doing it is basically as good as it's gonna get, and that's still very cumbersome and annoying. Optimally, you would get redirected automatically if you visit a post on another server, but that other server has no idea that you are actually from a different server, and your own server might even be unable to show you the post because the server you're looking at is defederated on your own, for example. A browser extension could bridge that gap better and more seamlessly than an on-site feature, either by redirecting you or showing you some injected button on the page to redirect manually.
@CodingAndCoffee Right, that makes sense. I was thinking specifically of the ability to paste a foreign URL into the search bar of my home instance. I think that should be a core feature.
Just a really minor UI Change. I'd like the ability for posts on KBin to auto show me the image without me having to click on the little image icon. I am a lazy banana and I don't like to click this button for every post, especially in image based magazines.
Does anyone have a monocrome Kbin svg icon?
Just turning the whole logo into one color doesn't look very good, I found this one, but it's a bit off on the bottom connection.
