For anyone who still hasn't found a compelling enough reason to switch to , allow me to present the future of :
https://youtu.be/FCfwc-NNo30

xejt,

@killyourfm So, setting aside, the privacy nightmare that is Windows and speaking specifically to functionality, why would a copilot be a bad thing? I would like to see this added to Linux. I am new to using ChatGPT but at present, I love it. I've solved a few problems that would have meant hours to days of internet searching and forum support otherwise. AI has at the least made me more self sufficient as a Linux daily driver for personal use.

Think about it from the standpoint of how many support and bug requests, or pull requests simply won't happen because now you have an AI helping you. It can be a force multiplier.

Now, in reference to privacy, I don't know if the Linux community in general might need to develop our own AI solution or leverage OpenAI / ChatGPT.

I'd like your opinion when you have time.

Also, unrelated, just bought a Steam Deck for Wifey. Looking for cool open world games we could play together if we hook up to a big screen. Would like some ideas.

@xejt bookmarking this so I can give you a proper reply when I have time.

xejt,

@killyourfm No rush. Youre busy making Thunderbird beautiful. That's way more important. Thanks for all you do.

@killyourfm and for all these better than life features, we only want your soul and data. Oh and your money, of course.

Also the video looks like the "Revenge of Clippy".

@killyourfm Enterprise administrators are going to LOOOOOOOVE this!

byteseb,

@killyourfm I don't really like the idea of giving Microsoft your personal documents and let the AI read them. That's definitely a privacy nightmare

killyourfm,
@killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

@byteseb agreed.

@killyourfm Despite having some conversations with folks, I don't get why people think this is a "last straw". Like it's all the same privacy nightmares as bing or cortana in the start menu, but this looks like it might actually be useful compared to the former. To me it's just another feature many will want to turn off.

    https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/github-copilot-will-bring-the-power-of-ai-to-windows-terminal 😩

    I saw this yesterday and was too frustrated to even read what they are planning. I've switched to wsltty, which is derived from Mintty. It doesn't have tabs, but I (re)familiarized myself with tmux and it's fine. I think even a bit better than before. Not sure yet. 😅
    Wsltty doesn't integrate with PowerShell, Cmd or anything else, but when I'm being honest: I spend most of my time in WSL anyway.

    @killyourfm

    killyourfm,
    @killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

    @mforester @sobfly Truthfully, this seems like an opt-in experience. Unless you explicitly sign into and use GitHub copilot, it PROBABLY won't make an appearance?

    @killyourfm

    Microsoft: "We're going to integrate ML into our public search engine, then upload all users' private content, tax returns, and homemade "movies" into that same ML system"

    Yup, wonderful idea. This definitely won't go sideways immediately after roll-out.

    killyourfm,
    @killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

    @cdp1337 no one says they’ll do that on purpose. But equally damaging mistakes have happened with Windows. (I’m recalling a nasty bug around 2018 or 2019 that just wiped out entire documents / photos folders.)

    cdp1337,
    @cdp1337@social.veraciousnetwork.com avatar

    @killyourfm My concern is less of your personal data will end up on bing, (though that's certainly a possibility), but more of juice for the ML which will get saved in their database, potentially leading to data leaks.

    ie: "How much did so-and-so pay in taxes in 2021?"

    For a system that is supposed to be adaptive and responsive based on learned data, this poses difficulties in data management, and part of the reason that my employer (smartly for once), disallows any ML/AI of our internal data.

    neffscape,
    @neffscape@fosstodon.org avatar

    @killyourfm I actually think an autopilot feature could be more useful in a Linux distro. Imagine asking "install Libreoffice" and it just install it without knowing the command line commands or firing up your software manager. Also, imagine asking: "why my damn NVIDIA card doesn't work correctly" and receiving actual proposal to fix things? I think it would be brilliant.

    LinuxClaude,

    @killyourfm

    I tried yesterday this copilot thing in Microsoft Edge on my phone. I can tell you that's it's far from ready if you don't live in the United States and don't speak English. Useless. Uninstalled. 👋

    wiredfire,
    @wiredfire@mas.to avatar

    @killyourfm copilot feels like one of the less crowbarred uses of LLMs to me. For many a PC is still a complicated thing. If this can make (comparatively) complex tasks easier to access for the very non-technical person then there’s a real use case here.

    The whole idea of asking Excel to cut a complex bit of data is alone a compelling scenario.

    It looks.. actually useful dare I say. Nothing that calls to me, but I’m not the target market for it.

    That said I’m not getting Win11 so it’s moot

    nnungest,
    @nnungest@fosstodon.org avatar

    @wiredfire @killyourfm nah computers are not that difficult. It is our ever growing expectations that they solve all our problems for us that make the problem solving hard for us to deal with. Eg how do I now automate this new thing.

    If your workflow consists of living in a browser, that is very different than data manipulation and wrangling (per your example).

    killyourfm,
    @killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

    @wiredfire the promising use-cases are numerous! So are the privacy concerns.

    wiredfire,
    @wiredfire@mas.to avatar

    @killyourfm it’s the lack of transparency around privacy that bothers me. I have a gmail, so I’m clearly ok trading some level of data for service, but I doubt many will have that data harvesting aspect put front and centre when agreeing to copilot.

    I’m not fully anti-data-snaffling, per se, but the EULAs long as the bible written in legal technobabble make it functionally impossible for folk to make an informed choice much of the time.

    ProfessorCode,
    @ProfessorCode@fosstodon.org avatar

    @wiredfire @killyourfm I quite agree with you.

    The real issue here is the lack of transparency and possibly user choice. If anything, it's very likely this will be enabled by default and very difficult to opt out of.

    I do think this will definitely become an integral part of the "Windows Experience" rather than just being a gimmick, though. It's quite powerful to be able to change system settings or crunch data by just asking Windows Copilot.

    It's amusing how Windows as platform is changing.

    killyourfm,
    @killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

    @ProfessorCode @wiredfire Likewise, I agree with you.

    I bet we'll see it as completely optional for the first year or two. Then the ability to opt-out will become more and more hidden, until finally it's just a "feature" that's locked in and permanent.

    wiredfire,
    @wiredfire@mas.to avatar

    @killyourfm @ProfessorCode not unlike how signing in to Windows with a Microsoft account has become increasingly difficult to avoid.

    Thing is, I LIKE a lot of Microsoft things. I have an m365 sub that is fantastic value.. but I’m actively experimenting on a spare laptop about getting OneDrive working nicely on Linux Mint. Once I’m happy with that I’m likely going to hop back to The Penguin.

    wiredfire,
    @wiredfire@mas.to avatar

    @killyourfm @ProfessorCode though that said, I might like to keep my options open for playing Left 4 Dead 2.. shall have to look if that has Linux support on Steam 🤔
