indigoparadox

@indigoparadox@mastodon.social

I'm interested in things (computers, mostly. Old computers, handheld computers, personal computers, minicomputers, etc). Sometimes I also like manga, Pokemon, Vocaloid, or other things.

I like programming as a hobby. Mainly in C and Python but I try to branch out sometimes if appropriate. I also like sensors and automation. Check my media tab for more!

I am 30 or 40 years old. 🦝

If this factory ever produces a shell that can actually be fired, I'll be very unhappy.

@NanoRaptor I mean, those are good, but I'm also partial to the ones that blow out fine nicotine dust and fumes. I don't drink or do other recreational drugs so I gotta take my highs where they come. 😔

The problem with outsourcing your chat or forum to third parties is that you don't own them. That is correct

The problem with self hosting those things yourself is that 1. nobody will use them because why aren't you just using this 3rd party app that everyone is already using and 2. have fun doing your own spam control

Seems like a bit of a damned if you do damned if you don't situation if you ask me

Can you answer this simple question about the C programming language?

$ cat test.c
<string.h>
<stdio.h>
int main() { printf("%d\n", strlen("\x01c")); }
$ cc test.c && ./a.out

What number does this program print?

@whitequark Hey I answered and then was worried because the majority answered a different thing but then I tried it after doubting my sanity and it turned out I was right! I'm pretty good at this. 😏

Apparently I forgot to turn on the clothes dryer four hours ago when I loaded it with the last load, and now it's midnight.

I'm frustrated.

indigoparadox,
@indigoparadox@mastodon.social avatar

I really need to figure out some kind of system to tell me (on the second floor) if the 240V dryer in the basement is running and for how long without modifying the house's wiring (or the dryer that matter).

indigoparadox,
@indigoparadox@mastodon.social avatar

@promovicz Yeah they have all kinds of three-prong smart plugs available (suitable for 99% of things), but I can't find a single four-prong 240V 2-phase (pretty much only used for clothes dryers) smart plug. 😩

indigoparadox,
@indigoparadox@mastodon.social avatar

@promovicz Yeah, most sane people around here use clamps, I think. I rent, tho, so I can't do anything too crazy, or that I'd want to take w/ me.

I'm also scared of high currents and voltages and AC in general. I've replaced 120V switches and faulty outlets and installed smoke alarms when I had to, but I always use the cheaty lever nuts, following the directions precisely and being very nervous about them after. 😩

I'd very much like to avoid that route, if I can! 😩

I didn't join the PC world until 1994 when Windows 3.x/DOS 6.x were new. Even from my corner of the computer universe I heard about how "bad" DOS 4.0 was initially. @hankg Love the shoutout for COMPAQ DOS 3.31. Still my go-to for sub-386 machines!

Also love the line "IBM made another mistake in assuming that it was free to change many undocumented aspects of DOS." One of the classic blunders developers still make today. 😌

Sometimes I'll see something that is so, obviously, brazenly contradictory to reality that it just puts me in a bad mood. The flaws are so obvious that I know that if I respond by pointing them out, I'll be shouting into the void at best, which makes it more annoying. I wish people wouldn't do that. Have some respect for yourself.

100MB file copied over sshfs:

104857600 bytes (105 MB, 100 MiB) copied, 1.70101 s, 61.6 MB/s

100MB file copied over sshfs via SSH ProxyCommand:

104857600 bytes (105 MB, 100 MiB) copied, 10.1955 s, 10.3 MB/s

And that's on the local network... guess that isn't a good way to achieve transparency to the NAS. 😔

indigoparadox,
@indigoparadox@mastodon.social avatar

@promovicz I've been using sshfs for a while, now, and the speed is fine... so I must be OK with 60MB/s. But it's really draggy through the proxy (but maybe I didn't give nautilus enough time to "adjust" after restarting autofs)...

I get it. NFS got parole and has totally reformed and turned over a new leaf and everyone trusts it now. I'm still... testing the waters. I'm using mbsync to backup my gmail to an NFS share and it's getting an awful lot of duplicate IDs... I don't trust it.

OK Maybe I just don't see ads often because I have them blocked so hard but the little box that shows ads in the CurseForge start up screen on Minecraft caught my eye. It's google adsense. I saw:

  • Ad from local college they want people to apply to teach STEM
  • Thriftbooks
  • Discount on makeup and brown foundation

I was disappointed there were no ads for antkeeping products. But this is CREEPY. Is this the current typical state of ads?

This is in ... a minecraft modpack login screen.

Title: Random shoots from ant sandwich?
Post: "My son bought an ant farm. It contained a box a tube and a sandwich. He started with lasius Niger ants these died. We bought some fire ants. Now there are shots."

@futurebird @irenes "Here's the thing. You said a "pogonomyrmex is a fire ant." Is it in the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that..."

"Pogo no Myrmex" (ポゴのマーメクス) sounds like an anime about a little ant that rides around on a pogo stick. It makes me think of the first boss, Mack, from Super Mario RPG.

I'm in this weird position where I don't necessarily think it's a problem for Brendan Eich to continue working in tech but almost anytime someone tries to specifically defend Brendan Eich's continued presence in tech they seem entirely unable to do so without saying something that sets off every alarm bell I've got

indigoparadox,

@mcc Every living thing deserves to live, and our system doesn't have much of a social safety net.

Idunno, what other marketable skills does he have? He seems like the kind of guy to have savings, anyway, so I guess this isn't really a good defense.

indigoparadox,

@promovicz I bought a bunch of them way before the prices got out of control... I guess they were a bit expensive to start, but $80 and they run off PoE with a little $20 hat and fit anywhere and can do composite video and GPIO to sensors and whatnot... they're so versatile... it seemed worth it! 😩

EDIT: I just realized that means they came out before the start of the pandemic... my perception of time really has stopped lol...

It'd be one of those 2-3" speakers, only bleeps, and it comes inside a reverberant metal box

indigoparadox,
@indigoparadox@mastodon.social avatar

@foone I have a USB-ISA bridge around somewhere that can theoretically do that (but it needs proprietary drivers for an obsolete kernel that are download restricted by a serial number I don't have)... Let's build a whole old PC out of USB! Like one of those flight simulator cockpits!

indigoparadox,
@indigoparadox@mastodon.social avatar

@foone Pretty sure it was that one, maybe. By Arstech.

Looks like it wasn't a serial, just a download link I didn't have... I found the downloads (including special DOSBox) in a Vogons thread after looking again... Software last updated in 2013. 😌
