in hindsight it may have been a mistake to google "gimp mask" to try to figure out how to do a layer mask in gimp, the free and open source equivalent of photoshop
@molly0xfff IIRC this is also easier in Krita (YMMV) ; layer masks were historically really clumsily implemented. But its been a while, so I could be way off now.

I had a similarly poor experience trying to debug a macro in a LaTeX exam template. Searching "LaTeX bottomrule" did NOT answer any questions about how to fix the horizontal line introduced at the bottom of the grading box.
@molly0xfff everyone always suggested #GIMP to me, but coming from Photoshop, that program never really made any sense to me. When I found out about #Krita I was so happy, because it was much easier to get things done. If you haven't tried Krita, I would really recommend giving it a try!
@molly0xfff there has been a small vocal group trying to get Gimp to change its name for decades at this point. There even was a fork at some point. It hasn’t moved the needle.
@molly0xfff oh gosh. Yeah that title has lead to some awkward conversations. I remember my open source proponent sys admin was trying to offer me advice on a tool for easy color picking off of active windows. The program is, no joke, named G-Spot. But of course has asked me, "Oh do you know about G-Spot?"
