Do you know how to read and write cursive?

*Read all options before voting, as I have broken them down.

Please boost for a wider demographic.

@dancinyogi Neither of my children were taught cursive. I remember distinctly having to buy an Osmiroid fountain pen in grade 5 — almost a rite of passage then.

Recently it has been mandated and re added to curriculum in my home province so all of my grandchildren will be taught it (maybe - the 11 year old may be beyond the mandate). Seems like a totally useless skill to me — but some mumbo jumbo justification is being used to get kids to learn. (a total anachronism in my mind)

danko,

@dancinyogi it'd be interesting to see what the age demographic for each response was.

@dancinyogi I can write it but they can't read it....

emiguipi,

@dancinyogi as french, I can do both, we are still learning (and are forced to use) cursive in primary school

@dancinyogi I can read it, but it's too much effort to try to remember how to write it.

lynnedubois,

@dancinyogi

Ya to both. Use it all the time to make lists, sign cards, take notes, um....that's about it.

@dancinyogi Depends who is writing the cursive. Myself: good days only; my dad: never; my mum: nearly always.

@dancinyogi A geographic component would be interesting. I was born in France and I learned it at school and I guess it’s common in European countries?

When I emigrated to Canada I was very surprised to see that it’s was 99% of the time unknown. So I had to learn to stop writing in cursive because so many people were unable to read my writing. 😊

@dancinyogi Yes, I can read and write it… but my “handwriting” is a combination of block “printed” capitals and a combination of printed and “written” lower case letters. Some are connected to one another, some are not.

@dancinyogi But I no longer choose to write cursive, I write so little it's not worth it.

I use to be able to write cursive as well as read it, but years of neglect and now my tremors have destroyed my ability to write it.

@dancinyogi I can read and write cursive, but I often forget how to make the capital J's.

@dancinyogi

I will admit tho… after learning to type in 1980 and program in 1982… my writing is a bit rough.

@dancinyogi I actually write in cursive by default.

@dancinyogi Yes, and yes, ....but why? I'm in my 50s, and can count on 1 hand the number of times I've had to use that particular skill.

Schools should instead teach children the proper way to type on a keyboard.

ozof,

@dancinyogi
the 3rd and 4th options imply that the 1st and 2nd are exclusive.
that is, the 2nd option actually reads, "yes, i can write cursive, but i cannot 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥 cursive"

Sir_Osis_of_Liver,

@dancinyogi

If it's a note for my own use, I use cursive. If it's for someone else, it's block letters.

Unless I'm in a hurry, when it will transition from block to cursive if I'm not paying attention. 🙂

toddz,

@dancinyogi
I feel like this is missing some options for “can, but refuse to.”

introversion,

@dancinyogi Can do both, thanks to my age I guess? 🤷‍♂️

But other than signing my name, I almost never write cursive nor encounter it to read. It’s a dying skill, and I’m not sure it’s worth pining for.

@dancinyogi What kind of person can write but not read cursive? ROM handwriting?

In Italian we say: “chi non può leggere la propria scrittura è un asino di natura”: “those who cannot read their own handwriting are donkeys/asses by nature”.

jigmedatse,
@jigmedatse@social.jigmedatse.com avatar

@dancinyogi Well, at least in theory... Whether practice allows it to happen would be another matter entirely. I have trouble with reading typeset books at times, and typing on a computer keyboard at times.

stonebear,

@dancinyogi basically my attempts at cursive these days are little better than chicken scratching; I know what it's supposed to look like, but trying to get it that way is frustrating, and printing is just so much easier...

hrtsmom,

@dancinyogi Wow, the top result really surprises me. Suggests the audience here skews older than I would have expected.
