Mastodon v4.2.8 has just been released.

On this release Mastodon changes the default registration mode to being closed. Meaning that if you have never changed the registration mode for your server, it will be closed by default.

Also, it introduces a feature that will "automatically require approval for new registrations in the absence of moderators". Meaning that if no user with moderation permission has accessed the server in one week, the registration mode changes to require manual approval.

So, I would recommend you check your registration mode after the upgrade is installed.

I will be starting the installation on Mastodon soon and this will cause about 15 seconds of downtime.

Also after the upgrade you will notice that you now have the option to enable hCaptcha on your server registration (Administration->Server Settings->Registrations) as I am testing it hCaptcha Pro to be included on all Masto.host plans.

@mastohost I like that you are testing hCaptcha Pro! Very very good move, made even better because you include it, rather than charging extra!

Love these security lockdowns! It's important to be safe in the Fediverse as access opens and grows!

mastohost,

@david True :)

To be clear hCaptcha Pro is optional and if you don't enable it, it's the same as not having hCaptcha on the server.

Regarding the difference between hCaptcha Pro and hCaptcha Free. It's that the Pro versions offers what they call "No CAPTCHA 99,9%" on the vast majority of requests. Meaning most of the time there will be no challenge presented https://www.hcaptcha.com/pro

If you already had requested hCaptcha on your server and want to change to the now included hCaptcha pro, please contact me.

@gatewayy@mastodon.gatewayy.net avatar

@mastohost How do you request hcaptcha? I did not see it as a plan ass on in the web GUI?

Upgrade installed!

Everyone running on Masto.host is now on Mastodon v4.2.8 with the option to enable hCaptcha Pro.

Any issues or questions, please let me know.

Thanks 🐘

@mastohost
Quick reminder for anyone that isn't aware:
Just know that blind/low vision people have trouble with Hcaptcha. Even though they claim their software is "accessible".
See documentation:

For some people, the use of a central CAPTCHA service may be a security and privacy concern. In addition, CAPTCHA can make the registration process significantly less accessible, particularly for individuals with visual impairments, such as those who are blind or have low vision.

mastohost,
@mastohost@mastodon.social avatar

@thibaultmol I agree, turning registration to require manual approval without any Captcha is a much better solution.

@hybridhavoc@darkfriend.social avatar

@mastohost @thibaultmol I was glad to see the notice that you've provided next to the setting to enable hCaptcha. 👍

mastohost,
@mastohost@mastodon.social avatar

@hybridhavoc It's not me, it's Mastodon that includes that :)

@mastohost hcaptcha a product of google, does not work
https://cheq.ai/blog/how-fraudsters-bypass-captchas/

You would have known this if you stopped using Microsoft GitHub for feedback on certain things.

mastohost,
@mastohost@mastodon.social avatar

@firecat Is hCaptcha from Google? Aren't you talking about re-captcha?! Those are different products.

ferrix,
@ferrix@mastodon.online avatar

@mastohost ooh dead man switch automatically turning on approval mode is a good idea

mastohost,
@mastohost@mastodon.social avatar

@ferrix yep, I like it too.

@mastohost

I am using Mastodon on my web browser (Safari)

it is still v4.2.7

When will it be upgraded?

mastohost,
@mastohost@mastodon.social avatar

@StephenRees You need to ask Mas.to administrator. That server does not run on my infrastructure.

@mastohost @joesteel

Had to read the first (erm… second, middle) paragraph a few times to parse its meaning, but got it.

mastohost,
@mastohost@mastodon.social avatar

@Chancerubbage Sorry, English is not my first language and I can write sentences that may not be the most grammatically correct.

If you have any suggestions on how I could improve the paragraph, please let me know :)

@joesteel

Chancerubbage,
@Chancerubbage@mastodon.social avatar

@mastohost

It is not a language barrier as much as it is an experience barrier.

That is, it would only have immediate meaning to someone hosting and administering their own mastodon instance.

mastohost,
@mastohost@mastodon.social avatar

@Chancerubbage ahh, gotcha. Yep, that's probably true.

Chancerubbage,
@Chancerubbage@mastodon.social avatar

@mastohost That is not an language barrier as much as it is a jargon barrier.

Fairly common problem on Mastodon, assuming the entire audience as insiders.
