I know the answer is "whenever the power company says is cheapest", but from a mental model perspective: is it better to plug in the car to charge on a sunny day where solar is generating excess capacity (on other roofs, not mine)...or better when the overall grid utilization is low, like in the middle of the night?

ferrix,
@ferrix@mastodon.online avatar

@chris_gammell if it was your solar then day, because it takes load off the grid and you probably couldn't sell your excess electrons for as much as grid ones cost. But since it's not your solar, then night, because if you have variable pricing it will be cheap then when load is low.

One of my classmates is applying for colleges, and she was complaining that she got waitlisted for UCLA. "It's unfair," she said. "I should be allowed in through legacy admissions. My grandpa and dad went to UCLA."

I said I thought the idea of legacy admissions is unfair. She agreed that they kind of are, but said it's still wrong of UCLA to not let her in when her dad and grandpa went there.

@MLE_online "I agree it's wrong but let's still do it" is a tidy summary of neoliberalism

I attempted to help my brother with a confounding problem with his car this afternoon, and after a few hours of work, we were no closer to an answer than when we started.

Recently, his battery has been draining down overnight. He thought maybe he had a bad battery, so he got a new one. Same problem.

I went over there today and found that the car is drawing 1.6 amps from the battery even when turned off.

We started troubleshooting by pulling fuses. The car kept drawing 1.6 amps through all of them.

I pulled the main fuse, and the car still drew 1.6 amps.

For a while, we thought it was maybe the alternator rectifier, but that wasn't it.

We unwrapped the sheath from the main bundle of wires coming off the battery and found no shorts.

We disconnected the wiring to the starter and that wasn't it.

The car still draws 1.6 amps! We can't figure out what's doing it!

Apparently the new Outlook has a feature that puts your inbox in "focused" view, meaning that half your emails are hidden, including many that you actually need to see.

Software companies should stop making new features. Every new feature now is terrible.

Today's Redis news is an unfortunate reminder that while open source itself is a public benefit to society, within our economic system if you are the provider of a public benefit to society, that's an inefficiency in your business that there will be constant pressure to eliminate. The more capital investment the provider accepts from others, the more pressure there will be on management to remove that inefficiency.
