Meta/Threads/Facebook/Instagram has made their own symbol for the fediverse, so we better have a good argument for why this is not representative of us because we are quickly gonna see a lot of this icon...
@liaizon I think we should maybe finally try to define what fedi is. Because we really don't have a serviceable definition. Which makes stuff like that even more problematic.
@liaizon I’m still thinking about the ⁂ idea from time to time, would maybe be a good time to communicate about it, make a little webpage, etc? /cc @raphael – Or at least make a one colour simpler version of the defacto pentagon symbol.
@nclm@raphael so glad to see you bring this up. It's been on my mind too. We mocked up a website idea for this ages ago but nothing ever got launched. Maybe this is a good reason to jump start that initiative
What I would suggest is:
– Maybe focus on the symbol and therefore not have a detailed list of Fediverse server types? But there could be a “what is the Fediverse” section.
– Maybe two text sections for the symbol, “why a symbol” and “why this symbol” (not the titles, just what the content could be about).
– A section with badges/buttons/icons to download.
We could also create an fediverse account to share all of this. With maybe the symbol in different styles/fonts every once in while, new badges/buttons, symbol spotted in the wild, etc.
I had discovered it from reading the Instagram (hosted) Threads documentation https://help.instagram.com/760878905943039 and then went to search if anyone had talked about it.
@liaizon so this is the most it interacts with the Fedi? Just shows you how many people liked your post, but doesn’t say who exactly? And you also can’t see replies from the Fedi?
@slim@liaizon I refuse to have the logo representing the entire fediverse be such a dry design invented by the same corporate scum who utilize their own userbase as nothing but datapoints and money.
The fediverse icon that's currently accepted is significantly more representative of not only the federation system, but of the people on it with the colors representing diversity.
Trademark or otherwise, it's encumbered with the corporate appearance. This place was created from people who were tired of centralized social media and the corpos behind it, adopting corpos into the fediverse would be an undoing of this.
@liaizon It represents how they see the Fediverse. They are the inner circle and everything else is outside and disconnected, but can look in to their closed network.

That's called bikeshedding. There are so much unresolved problems in Fediverse, like the recent stupid spam wave, yet some people think the logo is the biggest one.
@a1ba@liaizon there's no technical or marketing obstacle to trying to make new logos forever and see if one sticks better and no one is in charge of the fediverse yet so the main problem with my complaining is that I'm not proposing better ones. I'll endeavor to do better.
