As a person who did not watch it, asking honestly, was “Game of Thrones” a good show, or a shared experience? No one seems to talk about it now, or want to rewatch it. Is it fair to put it in the “Lost” bin and not bother or should I consider it?

@agiletortoise I watched it for the first time over the pandemic and I’m glad I did. That being said, it’s not a show I would rewatch on my own.

@agiletortoise You should watch first 5 seasons, rest is up to you.

@agiletortoise I noped out when the kid was pushed out the window, so I’m not a good judge, but GRR Martin will never finish the books. If you want a “completed” version of Game of Thrones the TV show is your only option.

@agiletortoise It was good, until it wasn't. You can tell seasons 7 and 8 were VERY rushed because the directors wanted to move onto their next project which ended up cancelled before it was Even in production. The show is still a stand out in my opinion, but knowing the history of how it all unfolded doesn't make a lot of people want to rewatch it. I only watched it at release but have been meaning to revisit it as it was a very good drama.

@agiletortoise I’ve rewatched GOT a couple of times and rewatched Lost at least a half a dozen.
I guess it’s a case of “all kids are different, eh?”

@agiletortoise

It was really good.

@agiletortoise It was absolutely great until the last 3 episodes, where they tried to fit 2 seasons of story into 5 hours.

@agiletortoise It’s a genuinely great show and I think it’s one of the great stories of our time.

Yeah, the last season or two are not as good, but there so much brilliant stuff here I think it’s easily worth it.

FWIW I watched it when it was originally airing and then I rewatched a couple years ago with my wife who’d never seen it. Had a blast each time.

@agiletortoise As a fantasy/scifi nerd in general, I loved it, though it did kinda jump the shark in the last two seasons, as they ran out of book content and had to improvise a bit…

@agiletortoise As an alternative point, I liked the books. The first three worked as a fairly good set.

The unfinished state of the series is a hard sell though. And there's lots of good fantasy on shelves these days.

@agiletortoise my wife and i came late to the party and watched one-ish a day seemingly forever.

which is to say that we didn’t participate in the shared experience until the very end when we finally caught up.

if you like like swords and dragons and don’t mind a lot of excessive gore and/or boobs you’ll dig it.

but if you like shows with a nice message that wrap up neatly at the end, maybe give it a pass.

but i found the characters and subplots worthwhile and enjoyed it quite a bit.

@agiletortoise a once-great show marred by a rushed final season. watch but prepare for a let down at the end.

@agiletortoise it's a little bit of both. Most of the run is pretty good fantasy prestige TV. (They eventually overtook the books and thus had to write their own ending, which went badly.)

But, it was also helped that it was THE SHOW for so long. Could always watch with friends on Sunday and talk about it Monday at work, and that was fun.

Would I start it today? Probably; it was genuinely good for a while! And there's some cultural context you'll have afterwards.

@agiletortoise I would say it's good, certainly the first half. I probably will go back to it but feels like it would get ruined going back too early.

I did that with Breaking bad as part of sharing it with people who never saw it. I've seen it too often and while it's easily one of my top shows, it's gonna be ages until I go back to it now.

@agiletortoise

The show is a bit extra everything, but probably easier to watch now that it's bingeable. Waiting for the next season, it is easy to forget who did what...

That said, I must admit that I really loved the ending...

You should see it if you have the time.

@agiletortoise I genuinely like the series and did rewatch it when my wife wanted to watch it, and I enjoyed it on rewatch. The ending isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it also had super high expectations on it so... 🤷‍♂️

I think you can know what to expect from the series if you enjoy the first 3 or 4 episodes of season 1.

@agiletortoise I often see TikToks with clips of the earlier seasons of the show, and it reminds me just how good it was before they rushed it over the finish line

@agiletortoise I agree with @stroughtonsmith. I decided to rewatch the first season recently and it was great. I remember the ending being very disappointing though.

@afarnham @agiletortoise @stroughtonsmith it's a good show — the last season was disappointing. Definitely worth a watch.
