With a few honourable exceptions (eg ST4 The Voyage Home, DS9's Trials and Tribbleations), Star Trek is at its weakest when it falls back on time travel stories. They're bland and trite, and they have a completely circular story arc. By the end, nothing has changed from how it was at the start. The whole of Picard S02 might as well not have happened.

Agreed, and the good time travel stories allow us to learn more about characters, and see them grow from the experience. Much as I was frustrated with SNW s02e03, we did learn more about La'an, and see more of the vulnerability beneath her stoic exterior.

There's no accounting for taste, I guess. I really enjoyed Picard s01, but I was bored by Picard s02 and disagreed with almost every writing decision made. Especially all the clumsy retconning, and the graceless sidelining of 2 good characters (Elnor and then Dr Jurati).

By the end I was watching only to get story resolution, not for genuine enjoyment. Very much like my experience of the last GoT season. S03 made almost no reference to the events of s02, and IMHO was stronger for it.

ErikaSanderson,

The audio sci-fi drama Cyclone is doing a live performance this Saturday as part of the Festival of Chichester.

There will be a Q&A after the show, and even if you can’t make it, people are encouraged to ask questions. So if you have any, please post them below!

@gbraad I remember liking it a lot, but absolutely nothing about the actual plot or characters. Probably ought to re-watch.

The Day the Earth Stood Still (the remake from 2008) is on Hulu now - watching with wifey. She hasn't seen it, I haven't seen it since probably close to when it came out. So it's like seeing it for the first time for me, too. (My parents always used to say stuff like that - sigh. 😂 It's been 15 years!) I do remember liking it, though. I think. I do know the premise. There's a ton of folks in it, too- Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, even Kathy Bates. No such thing as a bad Keanu flick, right? (We also recently watched Johnny Mnemonic. She thought it was rough- I love that stupid movie. 🤣)
