You know, one of the most interesting criticisms I heard of #KDramas this year was that it's becoming too "Westernised". (This was in some forums I've been in.) TBH, I didn't understand what they mean, but when I watched #TheVigilante, I got an inkling. It felt unnecessarily violent, gory & had little heart. It was well-executed but I just didn't feel moved by the main lead's murderous motivations.
Don't know, something feels off with Kdramas lately but I can't put my finger on it.

@liztai there are a lot of violent gory kdramas. I didn’t watch “Squid Game” because of the premise. But it does feel like Western streaming services are trying to capture more viewers.

I feel that in addition to the violence, there is more dumbing down. (My guess is to appeal to the large U.S. market).

For example, the "Strong Woman/Girl" shows. In SWDBS (the original) there were multiple storylines all centering around one motif, but in "Strong Girl" we're taken down to 1 main story line with a couple of shallow side stories that do not provide any support or contrast for the main story.

Also noticed in "Welcome to Samdal-ri" there is the same simple main story line with a couple of side stories, but they don't seem to be intertwined at all. I haven't noticed much symbolism or anything deeper yet & we're more than 1/2 way through. It's not bad, but it doesn't feel right.

@whoosh @liztai Strong Girl was dreadful. The acting felt forced and it was all so shallow. There was no Womeo kind of comedy. Just darkness and explanations regarding her power didn’t jibe with the first Strong Woman. There are a lot of older kdramas have gore and violence- period pieces and zombies. But it feels like some shows a dumbing down. And explanations of history or subtext that you’d get from Viki translations don’t happen w Netflix and Disney.

@jodmentum @whoosh i was wondering if this was a sequel to that previous Strong girl drama 🤔 It didn't attract me to be hinest, but looks like I am not missing anything. Hmm!

@liztai I have noticed a few of the new releases do come across as “Hollywood trying to imitate a kdrama”. Like- King of the Land might just as well been written by Hallmark for all its lack of substance beyond a ridiculous romantic fairy tale about rich people. Most kdramas (even the fluffiest romcoms) still explore society and society’s ills. US series seek to provoke emotion- Korean series seek to evoke emotion. It’s a big difference.

@notthatkaren you mean KDramas trying to imitate Hollywood? All i know is that I have been trying to find a cracktastic kdrama rom com a while now and can't seem to 🤷‍♀️ this year seems bad

@liztai Definitely feeling that

@sirsean what have you been feeling about KDramas?

sirsean,
@sirsean@aus.social avatar

@liztai they haven't felt like kdramas in a while, missing that iconic-ness....

I think it's just that the tropes were KDramas definitions, so whenever they aren't seen, it's like they're less of a KDrama

@sirsean yea that something-Ness that i can't describe. That unique quirkiness of the Secret Garden and stuff. Hmm. Not sure what it is but 8 miss it 😅
