atomicpoet,

Isn't it crazy how AOC seems concerned about the possibility of one billionaire-backed clone () potentially outshining another billionaire-backed Twitter clone ()?

I really wish she understood the reasons behind Threads having an advantage over Bluesky: rather than embracing , Bluesky decided to develop their own protocol entirely.

It all comes down to a certain billionaire, Jack Dorsey, who wasn't keen on collaborating with the established . That's why Bluesky is most likely headed for failure.

@atomicpoet

How is actually doing? We saw posts of reaching 80 million sign-ups, and it has been trending in the news, where BlueSky didn't get the same media attention?

Why is that? Does and just have such a pressence and reputation? Was it advertised more on and , where Bluesky was oppressed and cancelles on and didn't have any other platforms to advertise itself on?

It's quite interesting how the one just took off and the other died a slow death. Will be more interesting to actually see how long this lasts.

I think Threads is enjoying its success just due to people just trying to become the biggest accounts quickly by being the first on the platform. Similarly to if a alternative were to be launched. Influencers often chace these new platforms just to become the biggest hit due to being a first-mover.

LazyBear,

@Stark9837 @atomicpoet

I don't think has died a slow death....yet. The problem is that nobody can get on and use it, other than an elite group of folks who somehow snagged a coveted invite (seriously....how?). Why would a platform that people can't actually try out make any kind of mainstream waves?

I think was smart to just push "go" and let everyone pile in. Sometimes a very slow ramp-up doesn't work to create hype. Find your critical mass and THEN figure out the details.

Stark9837,
@Stark9837@techhub.social avatar

@LazyBear @atomicpoet

So is still invite based? That says a lot about the statibility and their actual trust in their own product. How can it still be invited based at this point?

I think I did get one. Will check in my email, but at that time, I was already very active here on and didn't care for it.

@Stark9837 @LazyBear @atomicpoet As a person who got the invitation, yes it's still invitation-based...

It's a good but not vibrant community, full of elitism like AOC. And no sustainable revenue model yet, I know they are collaborating with Namecheap to sell domains for their IDs

Sounds like a precursor for NFT-based domains to milk and the in one go.

@atomicpoet I have so much frustration that congresspeople are put in positions of power to regulate important tech issues that they hopelessly cannot grok.

Stark9837,
@Stark9837@techhub.social avatar

@atomicpoet These people don't understand tech and don't even know what a protocol is or that it exists. For the same reason they think is just another database. They think , and are just alternatives.

Look at they don't even have a protocol. They have a "proof-of-payment-received-by-your-local-billionar" sticker that a bunch of idits actually pay for, period.

@atomicpoet Remember Blue sky's much hailed discovery and search. Been looking for this post for twenty minutes using a dozen search strings and still kind find it or AOCs official account.

@atomicpoet Update: It's because AOC has blocked me! I must've chirped her at one point (honestly don't remember)

olavf,

@atomicpoet
Except she's on Threads too
https://www.threads.net/@aoc

atomicpoet,

@olavf Yep! And you know where she’s not? On or or or —none of which are funded by billionaires.

olavf,

@atomicpoet
It's bog standard congressperson complaining about Tech Bros but not actually doing anything about them.

Besides, here she can't get spoon fed.to people by an algorithm

Stark9837,
@Stark9837@techhub.social avatar

@olavf @atomicpoet

You've got a point. On , she would need to put in some work to get noticed. On , if 10p people like your posts, it is shoved down the throights of anyone in any local space.

olavf,

@Stark9837 @atomicpoet

I don't think AOC would have any trouble if she put out a PR etc. Cranston P Snord, the random delegate from Kansastan would have a tougher time to be honest unless the DNC or some state group set up an instance

Stark9837,
@Stark9837@techhub.social avatar

@olavf @atomicpoet

You have a point there. Her yoga post got a lot of flack, and most of her other posts are regarding trending news in the US or replying to other popular accounts.

She is almost always in the prime spot to be fed to other users by the algorithm.

Stark9837,
@Stark9837@techhub.social avatar

@atomicpoet @olavf

Has she even heard of them? Has she ever mentioned them publicly and explained why? Or does she physically just not know of them and just never established a presence on them?

Someone of here stature often has a PR group helping her with her presence, and they might just not feel , and the is worth the extra effort.

    Parts of the German government and the EU are also "experimenting" with an eye towards eventual adoption.

    And they should be taken to court for full adoption: government communication can not require a person to sign up for any company's services. The example to cite is acceptable document formats: odf, oodf, pdf, epub.

    Stark9837,
    @Stark9837@techhub.social avatar

    @jynersolives @atomicpoet @olavf

    Because they don't have the technical know-how.

    Otherwise, yeah, it doesn't make sense. Because the setup would be shitty and it wouldn't fedirate with other instances, it would just be this closed circle praising one single person, almost like a church. And that is exactly what they want.

    olavf,

    @Stark9837 @jynersolives

    Oh, they have the know-how. The amount of data science involved in a federal office campaign these days is astounding.

    But there's a fecking .democrat gTLD. There could be a .dnc with a little work. There should be an @aoc.

    They don't want to put in the work, especially if there's any risk (however minor) involved

    Stark9837,
    @Stark9837@techhub.social avatar

    @olavf @jynersolives

    The other thing is, do they have the infrastructure and man power to actually self host? It isn't too difficult, but you still need the hardware.

    Because she is a politician, she might be obligated to use local US based hosting for such an instance. Are services like that readily available, allowing people to easily host such instances?

    Also, would you create a account on a politically driven instance? I wouldn't personally, but I also don't live and breathe only politics like some people do. So they might like being easily identifiable by their username that they support her.

    @jynersolives @atomicpoet @olavf Politicians are like the vast majority of people, in that they don't want to have to set up and maintain servers just to use social media.

    Stark9837,
    @Stark9837@techhub.social avatar

    @olavf @atomicpoet

    Politicians, celebrities, and journalists will always follow the crowd.

    Crazy how our "leaders" are all just sheep.

    olavf,

    @Stark9837 @atomicpoet

    They're so desperate for eyeballs (legitimate or no) but don't want to put in any actual work, so they'd rather set up shop with the people they hate on in congressional hearings and news reports. Hypocrites gotta hypocrite.
