    @nadiaalbelushi I'm puzzled by this characterisation as it's so far from my own experience over many months of being there.

    There are shedloads of academics talking about academia all day. The default feed is chronological, as here, and users have a wide choice of algorithmic feeds to find content outside their circles meaning there's no single algorithm everyone will be using. The most popular algorithms certainly don't favour the biggest users either and are highly diversified.

    Full text search has been merged in main branch, and will be in the next (and final?) 4.2.0 beta 🎉

    It is opt-in, so it will take some time to be filled with people content as they enable their profile to be indexed, but this was one of the most wanted Mastodon features for some time.

    We plan to deploy it to mastodon.social and mastodon.online in the coming days to have a bit more feedback on it and see how it behaves in the wild.

    @renchap @prachisrivas Personally, I would be more than happy with simply auto-detecting fedi post links and redesigning the link preview cards to resemble QTs. Phanpy.social does this and it works very well. I appreciate for others here notifications and opt-in are a red line though.

    If we pretend that the only options are:

    1. Chronological feed
    2. Algorithmic feed where a company chooses the algorithm and objective function

    And we pretend that "Share of time is a perfect metric for happiness," then this might make sense.

    But... time spent isn't a perfect metric for happiness, and there is another option: 3) Algorithmic feed where the user has more control of the algorithm and objective function.

    Eg, chronological is an algorithmic feed!🙂🙃

    https://www.wired.com/story/meta-just-proved-people-hate-chronological-feeds/

    hughster,
    @hughster@mastodon.social avatar

    @mekkaokereke I don't know. For power users, yes, it could help to have customisability (much as with Twitter we have advanced search operators, until recently third-party clients, etc.). But I suspect the vast majority of users would still stick to defaults, so there'll still have to be that default company-defined algorithm.

    @markusl Checkatrade is a great place to find reputable tradesmen as well. Make sure they have good reviews and a long trading history. That, or personal recommendations from people you trust. Never, ever go with randoms from the internet, doorstep visits or letterbox flyers.

    hughster,
    @hughster@mastodon.social avatar

    @markusl I've quite a lot of experience with hiring people from CheckaTrade. Take my word or leave it, but it's absolutely legit and the reviews are accurate, having gone through the review process myself many times. If anything, the traders are noticeably polite and courteous in order to reduce the chances of a negative review.

    Check it out on TrustPilot and other independent ratings sites if you want reassurance.

    @AbandonedAmerica FWIW, I've found after only a few days (brand new account, never had Insta) of binge-following accounts (400+ so far) and binge-liking posts I want to see more of, my feed has remarkably quickly transformed from barren celebfest into something truly interesting and relevant to me. It was fascinating to watch it change.

    Far too many people with significant experience in tech: "I will never understand why the vast majority of ordinary people don't want to set up their own web hosting and servers".

    I mean, do you really not understand? It's obvious, surely? All the stuff you do is actually difficult and it's easy to you because you've invested a lot of time in it, and other people haven't.

    I wonder if other skilled professions do this. Are mechanics baffled that customers don't want to rebuild gearboxes?

    It’s now quite possible and highly likely that Threads will be 100x the size of the Fediverse, specifically Mastodon usage within the next few weeks or months at most.

    I’m fascinated to see how interoperability will impact Mastodon’s culture because I’m reminded of how the internet changed forever when AOL brought regular people online when it had previously been techies and academics.

    https://techcrunch.com/2023/07/10/instagrams-threads-app-reaches-100-million-users-in-just-five-days/

    @maegul @carnage4life Massive nope. It's a cursèd irritant bordering on harassment and it's unbelievably refreshing not to have anything like that there.

    atomicpoet, to twitter

    Isn't it crazy how AOC seems concerned about the possibility of one billionaire-backed clone () potentially outshining another billionaire-backed Twitter clone ()?

    I really wish she understood the reasons behind Threads having an advantage over Bluesky: rather than embracing , Bluesky decided to develop their own protocol entirely.

    It all comes down to a certain billionaire, Jack Dorsey, who wasn't keen on collaborating with the established . That's why Bluesky is most likely headed for failure.

    hughster,
    @hughster@mastodon.social avatar

    There are already a ton of UK companies, organisations, newspapers, celebrities, etc. with accounts here out of the box, all blue-tick-verified. Quite a good starting base. #Threads

    hughster,

    After following one (popular) account, my Home feed suddenly showed me a list of random influencers. Potentially annoying, I thought. Then I followed more accounts closer to my interests, and the feed started transforming to recommend me more of the same. So it's pretty strongly algorithmic. #Threads

    hughster,
    @hughster@mastodon.social avatar

    Some missing things becoming apparent already: alt text, post search (currently account search only), translate option on posts.

    T&Cs (yes I read them) said something about "AI accessibility text" so sounds like that's coming at least. #Threads

    Interesting—usernames have a Fediverse domain suffix, which, when clicked, open this message right there in the UI—so they're advertising their federation intent front and centre:

    threads.net Soon, you'll be able to follow and interact with people on other fediverse platforms, such as Mastodon. They can also find people on Threads using full usernames, such as @laurengodwin.

    I'm really glad the first wave already happened so those folks could learn about the Mastodon HOA and warn the people in the latest migration to just ignore them.

    The first time there was all this pearl clutching & Twitter migrants were like oh my heavens yes let's try to fit in and then a lot of them gave up after being tsk-tsked by dork ass losers. Those that remained here are immune to that shit now and can vaccinate everyone else with our antibodies.
