No disrespect to people killed or disrupted by falling bridges, but it would be nice to get even a tenth of that attention on road safety, the lack of which kills more than a million people globally each year, including 40k Americans, and injures many times more - a number that is going up when it should go down.

But there is nothing they can do and say to me that is worse than the treatment of my ancestors. I am proud of who I am and where I come from.” '

The unsung #heroes who help build America and keep it running— #immigrants #BridgeCollapse

“Does America need a more searing visual image than eight men working for their piece of the America dream — filling potholes on a terrifying bridge in 1 a.m. darkness — to understand that our nation was built by immigrants, runs on immigrant labor and needs immigrants?”

At least CNN got this one right.
Migrants do so much here in the US. They deserve respect. https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/28/politics/baltimore-key-bridge-immigration-analysis/index.html

At 01:24:30 the lights went out.

Right after that, the ship's course changed direction, heading towards the bridge.

It looks like the captain tried to change course when the lights and the engine regained power.

But 100,000 tons of mass has a lot of momentum.

Cargo ship from Singapore called Dali. Video shows a series of at least 2 power losses on the Dali ship just before crashing into the

What I want to know about the collapse in is why weren’t there tugboats guiding the ship under the bridge? Was it budget cuts? Are tugboats no longer a thing?

News about the that happed at 1:30 AM EST from the BBC, updated as news comes in. So far, 2 people rescued, 6 still missing, they were construction workers fixing potholes. One is in the hospital. The ship issued a Mayday before the collision, which stopped cars from coming on the bridge and saved lives. The cargo vessel lost power just before collision. FBI says it was not a terrorist attack. https://www.bbc.com/news/live/world-us-canada-68663071

it's interesting to me that along with the search and rescue efforts most posts are mentioning the traffic congestion that will be caused by the Baltimore bridge collapse. Few are saying anything about a large port being closed indefinitely. Any ship in port is now stuck there until debris is removed along with a large disabled container ship.
