An interesting takeaway from the English Local Elections was that candidates supporting Net Zero and stronger environmental policies did better than the pro mass motoring and climate denial/delay candidates.
It is odd that so much of the media don't want to report this, could it possibly have anything to do with the £2bn a year that the motor industry spends on advertising?
OK, so what is going to be done about it? We know there is a problem, but still aren't taking the actions needed. Firstly, stop all fossil carbon extraction. NOW!
Interesting paper. It correctly identifies the source of our problems: behavioral patterns, culture and power structures glorifying consumption and pronatalism. Authors recognize that targeting only symptoms of #overshoot (like #ClimateChange) with incremental technological interventions is a losing strategy.
3/4 I am, by the way, a (sadly not very active) member of CSSN (climate social science network), all reearchers look at causes of #ClimateDelay or #climatedelayism - a lot of interesting stuff here. Again, mostly about political economy, power structures and climate politics
The folks behind it know full well that it takes at least a decade of effort (regulatory and otherwise) before a new plant can be brought online. This won’t stop them from shovelling wheelbarrow-loads of taxpayer cash into the furnace to make it appear that they’re taking action. Meanwhile the grifters pedalling #SMRs will be laughing all the way to their offshore bank accounts.
"Kenner documented dozens of examples of the oil industry pressuring governments to hold back support for renewable energy, restrict funding for the development of clean technologies and weaken environmental rules that favoured their uptake."
#ClimateDiary There is no question that #COP28 will be the most important yet. The #GlobalStocktake will be the “biggest accountability moment in history”, and on its basis leaders will need to make crucial key decisions about fiscal and policy commitments. With less than two months to go, we need to all be as well informed as possible and put pressure on leaders as much as we can. I thought I would start a 🧵that I will keep going in the run up 1/n
26/n Two somewhat confusing terms that seems to be used a lot this year are #Abated and #Unabated#FossilFuels. What does this mean?
On the face of it, "Unabated" is when fossil fuels are burnt and the emissions end up in the air, just like that. "Abating", or reducing, those emissions would require restrictions such as technologies to capture and bury #CO2 etc. However, in practice these terms are very ambiguous and unhelpful, helping #ClimateDelay parties.
30/n Nevertheless, critics are definitely 100% right that #Greenwashing and #ClimateDelay will dominate at #COP28. One reason for this alone is Al Jaber's reliance on the consultancy firm #McKinseys in running #COP28. McKinseys have worked for many fossil fuel companies for years, and it telling, alarming and chilling in equal measures that they are so involved
39/n Here also a brillant sum-up by Timmons Roberts (CSSN) of what we - those of us who desperately want #COP28 to deliver real, much needed #ClimateAction - are always up against in the #FossilFuel lobby:
“a highly sophisticated, well-funded network of people who are used to winning, and to winning big” .
Btw #CSSN (Climate Social Science Network), set up by Timmons, does really great, incisive work on #ClimateObstruction and #ClimateDelay - do check it out
52/n take climate change seriously. Mostly of course this is because they are in the pockets of the fossil fuel industry or themselves petrostates (only 30% of fossil fuel companies are private corporations); it is geopolitics, money, power, interests that cause #ClimateDelay. But in addition to that, I do think that the fact that political and corporate leaders are, by definition, part of an extremely privileged and well-off class, also means that they personally do not really care
So #Sunak chooses the one time I’m not in #Norwich to make a flying visit…but he stays outside the city boundary to shore up the Tory SUV driving suburban commuter vote.
What made him choose Hethersett to announce he officially doesn’t give a $hit about the environment or our rivers? Was it fact it’s within spitting distance of rare chalk stream, River Yare?
"We’re able to do this because previously it was a disproportionate and poorly targeted old EU ruling that blocked these homes.
"Thankfully we can now reverse that, and alongside that we are investing hundreds of millions of pounds to continue protecting and enhancing our precious natural environment."
the circus that currently performs in finnish government is getting so out of hands that im just waiting for the day it just implodes in on it self like couple billionaires in a submarine.
The nazi-joke-goverment has started to undermine the work Sanna Marin and her government made for climate action on municipal level. Opposition parties and municipal officials are baffled by this, as the savings achieved are minimal and the law had only put into operation and was really popular.
