An interesting takeaway from the English Local Elections was that candidates supporting Net Zero and stronger environmental policies did better than the pro mass motoring and climate denial/delay candidates.

It is odd that so much of the media don't want to report this, could it possibly have anything to do with the £2bn a year that the motor industry spends on advertising?

Big oil privately acknowledged efforts to downplay climate crisis, joint committee investigation finds
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/apr/30/big-oil-climate-crisis-us-senate-report
Internal documents revealed by committee show companies lobbied against climate laws they publicly claimed to support.

OK, so what is going to be done about it? We know there is a problem, but still aren't taking the actions needed. Firstly, stop all fossil carbon extraction. NOW!

Interesting paper. It correctly identifies the source of our problems: behavioral patterns, culture and power structures glorifying consumption and pronatalism. Authors recognize that targeting only symptoms of (like ) with incremental technological interventions is a losing strategy.

@auscandoc the new push by the petro-provinces into #Nuclear is a #ClimateDelay tactic.

The folks behind it know full well that it takes at least a decade of effort (regulatory and otherwise) before a new plant can be brought online. This won’t stop them from shovelling wheelbarrow-loads of taxpayer cash into the furnace to make it appear that they’re taking action. Meanwhile the grifters pedalling #SMRs will be laughing all the way to their offshore bank accounts.

This is our world: decades of targeted, effective lobbying have delayed switch to energy.

"Kenner documented dozens of examples of the oil industry pressuring governments to hold back support for renewable energy, restrict funding for the development of clean technologies and weaken environmental rules that favoured their uptake."

There is no question that will be the most important yet. The will be the “biggest accountability moment in history”, and on its basis leaders will need to make crucial key decisions about fiscal and policy commitments. With less than two months to go, we need to all be as well informed as possible and put pressure on leaders as much as we can. I thought I would start a 🧵that I will keep going in the run up 1/n

26/n Two somewhat confusing terms that seems to be used a lot this year are and . What does this mean?

On the face of it, "Unabated" is when fossil fuels are burnt and the emissions end up in the air, just like that. "Abating", or reducing, those emissions would require restrictions such as technologies to capture and bury etc. However, in practice these terms are very ambiguous and unhelpful, helping parties.

52/n take climate change seriously. Mostly of course this is because they are in the pockets of the fossil fuel industry or themselves petrostates (only 30% of fossil fuel companies are private corporations); it is geopolitics, money, power, interests that cause . But in addition to that, I do think that the fact that political and corporate leaders are, by definition, part of an extremely privileged and well-off class, also means that they personally do not really care

The nazi-joke-goverment has started to undermine the work Sanna Marin and her government made for climate action on municipal level. Opposition parties and municipal officials are baffled by this, as the savings achieved are minimal and the law had only put into operation and was really popular.

Recording of government of Orpo won’t affect the ones who have already received favourable decision. In other words, those will be able to carry out their plans. Leader of municipal alliance Miira Riipinen says, that it was surprising that the government program went to this concrete level with this. “We knew to be waiting for drop in funding for climate progress, but that a law already implemented is removed was a surprise. There was already a funding for the climate plans and municipalities had already started preparing for the work. Riipinen says, that smaller municipalities had formed cooperation groups for the climate planning. Recruiting for climate coordinators for the concrete work had already begun.
Goverment of Marin had agreed and implemented the law in October of last year, that begun to oblige municipalities to make climate plans either alone or in groups with the surrounding areas. Goals of the measure was among others to strengthen climate actions in municipalities. Former environment and climate minister Mari Ohisalo said in last fall that the climate plans of municipalities speed up climate work remarkably in the whole Finland. In the climate plan there needed to be goals for reducing greenhouse gasses and the actions to reduce them. Government agreed in spring of 2022 that about 2,6 million euros are set aside for making climate plans for the municipalities.
Research engineer Teemu Ulvi from the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) says that he is very surprised of this new twist. “The law had barely been implemented, when it was already overturned. This sort of back and forth running is at the very least poor administration. He points out, that the cancellation of the law only gives minimal yearly savings, that are completely meaningless compared to the saving goals. Financial aid have already been removed from year 2024. Ulvi mentions that the municipalities were very active in applying for the financial aids. Applications begun pouring in immediately when they opened the applications. Appropriations were handed out very quickly.
