New account, migrated from old. I guess I should do an #introduction post for the #fediverse.
Hello! I'm a father, husband, and DevOps Engineer by trade. I build award-winning custom motorcycles in my down time.
I've had the fortune of messing with tech since the TRS-80. My dad helped successfully steer us clear of Microsoft product offerings my whole life. From Deskmate > GeoWorks > OS/2. Then from there, Linux > BeOS > MacOS > Linux. I really enjoy #elementaryos and #fedora.
My experience with #elementaryOS so far has not been great. After installing I had to do a bit of tinkering to install the right Nvidia drivers and be able to boot to GUI, many times the system hangs after coming back from suspend, the default terminal has some issue that makes it laggy, etc.
I've heard before "the Elementary OS community is small but very active/engaging". Where is that community? The official website links to Reddit and Slack. I don't feel like visiting Reddit regularly. To be able to join Slack I need a Gmail or Apple email, or an Elementary domain email.
I don't say this enough, and I am sure it goes for a lot of people, but:
Thank you so much for all your hard work FOSS people. That goes for people making both goodly licenced software, but certainly also the people making other goodly licenced content.
Specifically, i would like to thank @danirabbit for the hard, underpaid work on #elementaryos . You are a rock star!
#elementaryOS@elementary has a very stylish Desktop and several color deficiency filters, for people with Protanopia (red green color blindness) and similar color deficiencies. Very cool!! https://elementary.io/
Just curious, what would a modern GTK 4 app, made for @gnome, would look like on @elementary? Would it look like a GNOME app, or would there be some sort of theming? #linux#gnome#elementaryos
elementary OS 8 is now available in Early Access! Test the latest from us as we develop it. Read ahead to find out which new features and improvements we landed this month: https://blog.elementary.io/updates-for-february-2024/
@danirabbit and the folks at @elementary are making a really cool OS. They call it a “thoughtful, capable, and ethical replacement for Windows and macOS.” It’s open source and privacy focused. And it’s designed well.
(It’s free, but you can donate when you download it. Which is the smart choice.)
I have a very old Macbook Pro from 2012. The macOS unsurprisingly does not work anymore, super slow and laggy probably because of planned obsolescence, so I thought it is the best way to dive into #nixos. So I downloaded the KDE Plasma iso and started to get my hands dirty.
I should say, the laptop and touchpad are working very nicely with the latest packages available on Nix repository. So far, so good. I wish #Guix had such a good documentation.

the HDD is the bottle neck here. This Macbook Pro has 250GB HDD, 2GB RAM, and dual core CPU (I forgot the details). The cheapest and fastest upgrade was HDD -> SSD spent 30€ on an SSD but for the sake of testing, I also installed #ElementaryOS. The computer is now really usable. It works smoothly (even with 2GB RAM and all animations and transmissions are snappy. Only we browsing is a bit laggy with epiphany.
So to test the limits I quickly installed #Guix as additional package manager

Well, my first contact with @elementary was not great. The installer only booted with the "safe graphics" option. After installing, I had to figure out (thanks Arch wiki!) that I need to add 'nomodeset' to grub to be able to successfully boot. Then I got greeted by a low res desktop.
Eventually I was able to install some Nvidia drivers, and now it booted for the first time with the right resolution... But everything is tinted in red. Well, I guess it's time to sleep.
A day late, but it’s still there: the #Linux and #OpenSource News video!
Yes, you probably didn’t even notice it wasn’t published.
So, in this one, #Fedora KDE decides to officially drop X11, the latest Nvidia drivers seem to fix the last big Wayland problems it still had, the Linux kernel 6.6 is out, there are some details about #elementaryos 8, and the Web DRM API from Google is dead:
It’s been just one month since we released OS 7.1, but we’re already hard at work on OS 8! Read ahead to find out more about our plans, process, and progress and opportunities for you to shape the next release: https://blog.elementary.io/lets-talk-os-8/#elementaryOS
