🆕 blog! “Rebuilding FourSquare for ActivityPub using OpenStreetMap”

I used to like the original FourSquare. The "mayor" stuff was a bit silly, and my friends never left that many reviews, but I loved being able to signal to my friends "I am at this cool museum" or "We're at this pub if you want to meet" or "Spendi…

There are and then there’s this. A supermassive Mother of all Breaches [] includes records from thousands of meticulously compiled and reindexed leaks, breaches, and privately sold databases. The full and searchable list is included at the end of this article.

Is there a version of FourSquare / Swarm for the Fediverse?

I want to check in to a specific location and share that online. Not looking for badges and mayors etc.

Just a geotagged post saying "I am here".

@Edent I've only dabbled with Overpass, but am curious to see what a alternative to 's Swarm would look like. I feel that Swarm is already quite niche as an app, as it used to be quite popular, but I only know a handful of people still using it, so a federated alternative could be even more niche.

With the help of @darius's brilliant https://tinysubversions.com/notes/activitypub-tool/

And thanks to @ldodds's exquisite https://osm-queries.ldodds.com/tutorial/index.html

I am now able to find a nearby from and share it as a post to the Fediverse!

Early days, but I think building a style "Check In To This Location" service might actually be possible!

(Mastodon doesn't expose the lat/long - but they are there.)

Data brokers know everything about you – what FTC case against ad tech giant Kochava reveals

"... [Kochava] secretly collects ... and otherwise obtains vast amounts of consumer location and personal data. It then analyzes that data using AI, which allows it to predict and influence consumer behavior in an impressively varied and alarmingly invasive number of ways..."

I feel @jamesthomson might appreciate this:

So y’all remember app (spin off from )? When you check in and earn , it animates them falling/flying/splashing around the screen.

The number of coins in the correlates to the number earned for that checkin.

Usually a checkin gets just a few coins. Sometimes bonuses will net 100+.

I had two checkins today with insane bonuses resulting in 600+ coins each. The app choked horribly trying to the animation!!

My inner geek gets a lot of joy using and to enter information about restaurants and cafés. However, I really wish there was a website or app like , which leveraged this data, so I could use it to find somewhere to eat lunch or dinner, otherwise all this data feels a bit academic.

Something like but for the Fediverse?

Anyone up to build it?

Found a couple of old screenshots from 11 years ago today.

This was likely my Samsung Galaxy Nexus device as I'm pretty sure I was rooted and using a custom ROM, though possibly I hadn't rooted quite yet.

Not sure what I was thinking with these setups, as I could never use anything like this today.

Not even sure what launcher I was using at the time either. Very likely was already using @novalauncher or Launcher Pro.

Screenshot of my Samsung Galaxy Nexus device from 11 years ago. You can see a big clock, weather, battery widget across the top and some app icons across the bottom.

Here's something both surprising and a bit creepy. After having talked to you about it, and having never heard from them for like a decade....

apparently still lives!
