Google I/O wrapped up, and I have a LOT of thoughts. Shot a quick reaction video on the keynote here https://somegadgetguy.com/b/455
Some really interesting AI tools are coming, but will Gemini search continue hurting website traffic?

asjmcguire,
@asjmcguire@allthingstech.social avatar

@SomeGadgetGuy GoogleIO felt a bit "hey I know OpenAI released this cool thing yesterday - so let us tell you about all the things that we have coming later in the year, but not today" Don't you think?

@cliffwade
Yeah, if you didn't buy it direct from Google, you have to claim for it. I guess because of the cooling off period us consumers are afforded. So it ensures that we definitely have not returned the phone and kept the watch.

asjmcguire,
@asjmcguire@allthingstech.social avatar

@cliffwade
Yup. They wanted proof of purchase and delivery as well as the IMEI1 and a screenshot of the about phone screen showing the IMEI1 number.

Oh hey... I wonder what day it is?

Oh right.
It's launch day!

asjmcguire,
@asjmcguire@allthingstech.social avatar

@cliffwade
I ordered the Obsidian because apparently the 256GB only comes in Obsidian in this part of the world (at launch anyway). Because I went through my carrier, I have to claim the Watch using the IMEI number of the phone. I haven't turned the phone on yet. I'm letting it acclimate to the inside temperature because it was bloody freezing. And also letting it charge a bit, because it arrived at 61%

Good morning and happy Thursday to all of you around the today!

For our today, let's talk about our plans for the day today.

For me, it's work stuff, kind of? I say kind of, because I'm anxiously awaiting my Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel Watch 2 to arrive via FedEx which is out for delivery as we speak. Hard to work waiting on that. LOL

Really need to catch up on TV shows this evening too!

asjmcguire,
@asjmcguire@allthingstech.social avatar

@cliffwade
Haha, catch up on TV shows... Good luck with that. It takes bloody ages setting up all your apps again on a new phone.....

asjmcguire,
@asjmcguire@allthingstech.social avatar

@cliffwade
It's banking stuff and Google Pay uh sorry Google Wallet that take the time for me....

This is bad and potentially dangerous but I have to admit that if I was in and had access to transporters I would definitely beam things to my friends' coordinates but like two feet in the air above them, like pudding or a cat.

asjmcguire,

@GrimmReality I mean.... most of us secretly would give this prank a try at least once.....

What if there were no hypothetical questions?

asjmcguire,
@asjmcguire@allthingstech.social avatar

@dgar if there were no hypothetical questions, then many hypothetical people would hypothetically still be alive because the hypothetical trolley would not have hypothetically killed them.

That's hypothetically worth pondering 😂

asjmcguire,
@asjmcguire@allthingstech.social avatar

@dgar I mean in a way - when self driving cars are a normal thing.... then I guess this particular thought experiment will be tested practically. So many questions then, when the car has to make a decision about who to kill.... who will be liable when the inevitable court cases spring up?

This pretty much explains the Fediverse

Share this post and if you can, post a comment because, genuinely I woke up this morning to a staggering number of shares and favourites.

The comments PROVE Mastodon is the place where common decency is being restored. I feel hopeful for the future.

What lovely people you all are.

Comment to be part of this new town square, or as I like to think of it, our tearoom. And add me, I'm going to be brewing lots of tea.

asjmcguire,
@asjmcguire@allthingstech.social avatar

@cloudguy just a reminder that the "town square" went from being globally for everyone, to well the people who pay can go in the town hall, and will rarely hear from the people who are outside in the square. To now well we are thinking about fencing the town square and only letting you in to it if you pay us. That will ALWAYS be the problem with a company looking for profits when they talk about these digital town squares.

I don't know if it's just me or not, but the update to Mastodon 4.2 broke the way Mastodon handles the PWA if you install it on PC.

Before, you would click it to open it and it would default to Advanced Web View if that's what you were using.

Now, it defaults to single column, even if you have use Advanced Web View checked within settings. You then have to click the link at the top of the page in the screenshot below to actually get to your multi-column layout. @Gargron

asjmcguire,
@asjmcguire@allthingstech.social avatar

@cliffwade @peter tested and it is indeed the same here. Let me check mastodon.scot hold on. Yup mastodon.scot is the same too. It's fine in a browser, but the PWA for both goes to /home pinging @trumpet

asjmcguire,
@asjmcguire@allthingstech.social avatar

@cliffwade @peter @trumpet at least there is a handy link on the right hand side to quickly jump to the advanced interface without having to delve into settings.

"Posts, accounts, and other specific pages are opened by default in the classic web interface"

asjmcguire,
@asjmcguire@allthingstech.social avatar

@cliffwade @peter

hmmm your layout looks different to mine. You don't have the AllThingsTech branding, your dark mode looks darker, and I can see a lot more rounded stuff on yours.

When I clicked the notification on the desktop it opened the app, and clicking advanced link opened this thread in the right hand column. Pressing the back link at the top opened the Getting Started column.

@amd @homeassistant I'd imagine for the people who are getting them to get their family members started - probably have spare radios anyway. I know for me for example, I have a conbee2 and a long range Bluetooth USB that are going spare now. I use ESPHome Proxy for the bluetooth and Skyconnect for the Zigbee now.

What is the story behind your username that you use here on the and possibly other places?

Most everyone has a story behind the username(s) that they use, and others often want to know what it is.

asjmcguire,
@asjmcguire@allthingstech.social avatar

@cliffwade For social stuff I use asjmcguire - which is actually my name. Andrew Simon Jones-McGuire.

For stuff that I want a bit more seperation, I use wkd2639 (eg for my fetish instagram profile) - which is because when I was 18 and setting up my Yahoo account I was drinking a bottle of Blue WKD (it's an vodka based drink in the UK). 2639 is Andy when using T9 predictive text on pre smartphones.

@og @cliffwade Happy Saturday to both of you. What a terrible week it has been here. An entire week of let-downs and massive anxiety..

asjmcguire,
@asjmcguire@allthingstech.social avatar

@og @cliffwade there is a Government scheme in the UK. Called Eco4 where energy companies will pay to upgrade the energy efficiency of very bad performing houses. On Monday the guys turned up to start installing the internal wall insulation, and they left again after 20 minutes, because the job is way bigger and more complicated than they expected. The solar and heat pump guy was supposed to come to do the survey yesterday, and didn't turn up.

asjmcguire,
@asjmcguire@allthingstech.social avatar

@og @cliffwade many days of getting up waaaay earlier than I normally do. I just have to keep pushing forward and remembering that it will all be worth it in the end......

asjmcguire,
@asjmcguire@allthingstech.social avatar

@cliffwade @og when the work actually starts, which has now been delayed to the week of the 25th, I'll really struggle. Having lots of people in my safe space for a week, and then probably the week after that too. But I intend to do my best. Might need to stock up on the valium ha
