The Videogame Industry Does Not Exist, my new book with @themitpress is out now! This is my attempt to intervene in how we talk and think about gamemaking as not just an entertainment industry but as a cultural field, built up from complex tensions between commercial and creative pressures and identities.
Reposting my #introduction, since I'm seeing a lot of fresh faces recently. I'm an associate professor at UMass Amherst, where I teach about #journalism and #MediaIndustries. My research focuses on media distribution and, occasionally, dysfunction in the adtech industry.
I also co-edit a book series on the civic impacts of media distribution for The MIT Press. Feel free to hit me up if you're working on a relevant project!
“Mass #propaganda discovered that its audience was ready at all times to believe the worst, no matter how absurd, and did not particularly object to being deceived because it held every statement to be a lie anyhow. The totalitarian mass leaders based their propaganda on the correct psychological assumption that, under such conditions, one could make people believe the most fantastic statements one day, and trust that if the next day they were given irrefutable proof of their falsehood, they would take refuge in #cynicism; instead of deserting the leaders who had lied to them, they would protest that they had known all along that the statement was a lie and would admire the leaders for their superior tactical cleverness.”

Announcement about the list of comm & media scholars I've been maintaining with @bethanyklein: The Google Doc will continue to be maintained, but I’m also setting up a new version of the list compatible with the discovery tools that already allow folks to browse and search other lists of academics on Mastodon. Scholars need to opt into the new list to be included and can do so by following the handle @commodon.
If you're into #gamestudies#history#mediastudies You might like this interview two of my students and I have out -- it's with Jessyca Durchin, who produced Barbie Fashion Designer @histodons
I'm a PhD candidate in Media and Cultural Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I'm studying Internet culture and am interested in how individual people relate to corporations, governments, etc. through various types of technology.
My dissertation is about how individual people are constructed as "Users" on the internet.
For the 20th-anniversary edition of ALTERNATE CHANNELS: QUEER IMAGES ON 20TH-CENTURY TV, I went through the 500-page original, fact-checked everything again, added 100 photos, and restored material the publisher had cut from the 1st edition.
I’m a critical #datastudies and #mediastudies scholar who focuses on #datacenters and lately also on #humanoids in the #cloud. I’m an Associate Professor at the U of #Calgary (Alberta, Canada). Very gay and very pro-masking and -taking care of each other. Hi! 💘
My research explores the eroticization of Tudor queens in a range of popular genres, from #earlymodern letters and plays, to tv and #fanfiction today. I also consider the affordances and limitations of color-conscious #casting in #perioddrama.
