I'd like to use a workflow where each message that gets bookmarked by me is automatically screenshotted to PNG, archived in a local directory and its text content + image descriptions get added to a text file (preferably ) together with a link to the screenshot and the original message URL.

Somebody willing to volunteer? 🙇

@publicvoit some possible approaches:

  • integrate with mastodon.el's bookmark action
    • benefits: fully in emacs
    • cons: not availiable out of emacs
  • have a cron script pull your bookmark feed via API and do the capture action
    • benefits: works for all of your mastodon clients
    • cons: time delay
  • use regular page capture techniques like you are already doing with SingleFileZ
    • benefits: fits into your existing flow
    • cons: needs extra filtering

I recently explained two different colleagues working in the IT the basic concept of a template page you need to copy for a new meeting. 🤷

@publicvoit

Reminds me of my colleagues faces when I told them to just use office template files, so that people would no longer misname copies of existing files or mistakenly change last weeks document.

Since opening templates always results in a new unsaved unnamed document. 👍

I'm writing a longer (as it seems) article on the lock-in effect of solutions like that are using open formats like for storage. The file format is not the only thing that might lock you in.

I did already start with a list of arguments but also want to collect your ideas so that I don't forget a good argument.

Please, no emotions, just facts and objective arguments.

Reply here in this thread and I'll collect ideas from it. 🙇

@publicvoit I don't think, that Markdown per se is a lock-in factor. Ideally, every tool would save everything as flat text files. That would truly be open, imho.

Ages ago, I was using a simple, text file based local wiki. Things got complicated ever since.

Btw, are you familiar with ?

gisiger,

@publicvoit I see, yes Obsidian is guilty here. I think. I'm a Joplin user myself.

Yes, OBTF is exactly that, evberything in one single text file: https://www.williamhern.com/living-in-a-single-text-file.html

And this guy, but he's about to do lists. I myself use todo.txt in a single text file for that:
https://jeffhuang.com/productivity_text_file/

I came across OBTF lately by reading this one:

People using (and similar) don't even understand when I'm writing about situations.

If those services could be easily replaced by any Markdown edtor and a decent sync mechanism, why are they using those services in the first place? 🤷

I'm going to blog about that to make it more clearer.

@keno3003 Danke für das Google-Such-Tipp-Video.

@publicvoit wait, is it compatible with denote?

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@mms Not without re-writing my scripts.

denote is cool but has made different (and IMHO suboptimal) naming conventions.

So I'd rather welcome a way of changing denote's file naming scheme.

However, I'd say that you have plenty of room beneath denote files. I do manage lots of files with my method but my Org-mode data is not part of it.

@publicvoit I thoroughly enjoyed this post. The way he stresses the choice tool is less important than your work flow and requirements. And the need to start small and just capture notes.

publicvoit,

@andyc Absolutely.

That's what I mean by "choose a method" in my tool-choice process.

And that's what I tried to emphasize on https://karl-voit.at/2020/01/20/start-using-orgmode/ -> start lean/small and see where it takes you.

This small function is probably a game-changer in my personal experience:

From https://www.emacs.dyerdwelling.family/emacs/20240305160708-emacs--unified-interface-for-switching-contexts/ (he's not on the Fediverse as far as I know) I stole the code and created my-switch-to-thing() for switching to:

  • buffers
  • recent-files
  • bookmarks
  • slots
  • directories
    ... with one single command. 🤩

This replaces multiple "jump to"-commands in my setup.

You can find my adapted version in https://github.com/novoid/dot-emacs/blob/master/config.org

@sping @publicvoit I was a bit confused when I first read that article, because I thought consult-buffer can do all that and was even mentioned in the article. So now I think the author simply was unaware. Or am I still missing something?

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@chke @sping I don't know buffer-consult and maybe the other author doesn't know as well.

However, this short piece of code I do understand and I was even possible to extend it for eyebrowse.
