I accidentally found a security issue while benchmarking postgres changes.

If you run debian testing, unstable or some other more "bleeding edge" distribution, I strongly recommend upgrading ASAP.

@AndresFreundTec That was more than just good - you probably stopped a devastating attack on the whole industry. The open source community owes you a huge debt of gratitude. Had that exploit gotten into the wild it would have been awful. Catching it early was an immense win.

I hope Microsoft recognizes how much of a contribution you made to the entire industry.

Astrobiotic has apparently had a catastrophic anomaly with the propulsion system on While the vehicle is still apparently operating, without propulsion it cannot change its orbit or land on the Moon.

Space is hard, deep space doubly so. Hopefully Astrobiotic can figure out what happened and try again with a redesigned spacecraft.

So basically Humane's AI pin is the combadge from Star Trek? Sure, it will take pictures and video, but there's no way to actually frame any of your shots. And it relies on "AI" as the primary interface, so good luck on getting useful or correct answers most of the time.

It's an interesting concept, but no one asked "is this useful in the real world?"

The Atlantic has a piece on Henry Ford's vicious antisemitism.

It is ironic that Elon Musk wanted to be the next Henry Ford, and he became the next Henry Ford - just not because they both built cars, but because they both made the world worse by spreading hate and conspiracy theories.

At the risk of repeating myself, here is a warning. You will move. At some point in your life, you will move. You may say to yourself, "I don't have a lot of stuff; it'll be fine."

WRONG.

"But - I don't buy a lot of stuff -"

You do. Trust me. Look in a closet and think of the logistics involved in packing that closet.

"That's you, not me. You have a lot of stuff, I have next to nothing."

Wrong.

You. Have. More. Crap. Than. You. Know.

Thin it out every year. Trust me!

Reminder to my regulars ❤️ (who I am so grateful for and I thank for all the kind words yesterday):

We’re unexpectedly on the road back to Calif. from Canada today because father in law needs us.

So live-threads of legal proceedings won’t happen. News alerts will, as long as we have a good connection.

Posting on the road helps relieve the boredom, so yay.

The drive, though? Oy. 6x/year, so, no, not fun anymore. Beeline home, 9 hour driving days. Hammy loves it though.

😊

Today is Dax's 12th birthday!

Dax came to me at the end of my marriage with my ex. It was a dark time and he was my little buddy that stayed by my side constantly. When I had my knee surgery a few months ago he was always by my side, looking after me, and worrying about me. He is attentive, curious, loving, and brave.

He’s my best bud. Even though I know we only have a few short years left together, I hope that I can continue being his best friend for the rest of his life.

Happy birthday Dax.

Phone Technology Question!

The hubs and I were having a discussion about Apple continually releasing new iPhones without any actual innovation. That lead us to a few questions, that I, of course, said, Well, I'll ask Mastodon about it! So here goes:

Have we reached as far with Phone Technology, as it exists as a rectangle piece of hardware in your pocket, as we can?

Is the future in software?

What about a better version of Google Glass?

Are we heading towards implants?

Please don't mention anything with a see through screen, literally no one wants other people to see what they are doing on their phone! LOL

jayreding,
@jayreding@mastodon.world avatar

@RickiTarr The biggest impediments to doing something different are batteries and screen technology. Right now the smartphone is the best design with the technological constraints we have. Even folding phones all uniformly suck because the screen technology is not sufficiently reliable.

Something like Google Glass might end up being the next smartphone, but not until technology catches up. Apple's Vision Pro is probably the 1.0 version of that, but it's going to be long before that's viable.

    @Teri_Kanefield I could see that being the best option of a bad lot. A gag order, even a narrowly-tailored one is going to be appealed, and there's no way in hell Trump will ever honor it. So then the Court has to figure out the punishment which is just as fraught.

    Moving the trial date up is, as you noted, less appealable and achieves the goal of minimizing interference with the jury process.

    Here's why USB-C sucks. Both the iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Pro will likely use the same physical cord, but the speeds are vastly different.

    You have one connector, sure, but what that connector can do can be vastly different between devices and it's hard to figure out what can do what.

    There is a fantastic and frightening report at @ProPublica about the failures of the Navy's Littoral Combat Ship. After spending nearly $100B on the LCS program, the Navy got a bunch of ships that could not do the job and are being quickly retired. Military procurement in this country has become a cash cow with Congress looking the other way, to the detriment of our fighting forces.

    The pad (other than a fence) certainly looks great after that static fire. The "booster bidet" system seems to be working exactly as needed and the concrete around it is fully intact. If we have all 33 engines working this will mean the chances of a second Starship test launch in the next few weeks look to be quite high.

    @jayreding@mastodon.world avatar

    I used to think Elon Musk was a talented engineer, but demanding a level of precision that is at best ruinously expensive and more likely physically impossible is just crazy pants. Even tiny temperature fluctuations would make that level of precision impossible. Tesla has a huge problem with inconsistent build quality and has for years - and Musk's idiotic demands will just make that worse.

    @Teri_Kanefield Willis' argument about the Hatch Act is a bit more tailored than "he committed a crime." It's not that Meadows committed a crime, it's that the Hatch Act defines what is within the scope of his duties, and political campaigning is excluded.

    It certainly could go either way, but Willis has a good statutory argument and those tend to be very persuasive to courts especially in cases that might otherwise be close.

    jayreding,
    @jayreding@mastodon.world avatar

    @Teri_Kanefield To be fair, there are many reasons it would be much easier to represent Meadows than Clark. Not the least of which is that Clark appears to be a bit of a nut job...

    jayreding,

    @Popehat Especially given from what I'm seeing Judge Chutkan is largely giving the Government what it wants in large part and being very clear that the Court is not going to let politics dictate how the case unfolds.
