I just found out my race is only 4,600m EG. I know that's still a lot but it's way better than the 5,500m I thought it was.
Suddenly the opportunity to become over confident has arrived and I don't want to waste it.
Next Tuesday is my double run day and I'm thinking Mica and Antoine Peak repeats. I will withhold my overconfidence until after that.

Got another DNF this weekend, I wasn’t mentally (my mind wandering everywhere) nor physically (sluggish and sleepy) in the race, got to the half and when I thought about doing the same thing for another 7:00 hours I dropped, wasn’t enjoying it at all. I think my taper was too long, I didn't like the course/organization and then other stuff/life got into my head and that was it, felt done with in general.

@r_df_ng Still, running for 7 hours is a great effort, well done! 🙌

And this is a nice illustration of what I like to say about the big difference between finishing an ultra and DNFing: intrinsic motivation is key. If you are not intrinsically motivated by the race, trail, course in question, chances are high you will find a good reason to drop out.

Is it spelled Ultrarunning or Ultra Running?

Seems it is neither of both… …but what is “hiking with shorts” then.

Hello friends! How would you prepare for a 50-mile race that starts at midnight?

I seldom go to bed before 23:00, so trying to get extra sleep the day of the race is probably going to fail, but I'm open to hearing your personal strategies!

I did it! Ran 50k on from Ray Miller to Kanan Dune. It rained, but before the rain the trail was glorious. And even after the rain, tbh. There’s something about boughs of ceanothus kissing you with flowers and rainwater as you run by. So many flowers. Just beautiful!

50k attempt tomorrow on the Backbone, and it’s scheduled to rain but only .4”, so fingers crossed!
I’ve got snacks prepped and socks darned. Just need to scrape out the dried mud from my shoes from last time.

Changed my bib to the 100k race, I feel I can make it this time. Brief also done.

That was tough but I'm finally a 100k finisher! Went very conservative with food variety because of what happened last time and got bored quickly, I'll change that, kept much more hydrated and at a lower intensity almost ran the whole way.

If you consider entering a 300km race, I can recommend the Northern Traverse: very well organized and amazing nature.

❓🙋🏼‍♂️Good ultra running headlamp that passes UTMB requirements … and which has a strong beam (to safely enable night trail running) plus powerful batteries to last a looong night … do you have one that satisfies these points and you can happily recommend?

After 12.5 hours on her sore and blistered feet, Wonder Woman elected to take the finisher’s medal for the 50-mile distance and call it a day. Many thanks to all who offered support through the race.

That’s about 75 miles worth of food and water. Wonder Woman (Mrs. Amerpie)is ahead of schedule after the first 12-mile loop and back out on the course.

“Is the Barkley the world's toughest race? In a word, yes. But that's reductive and misses the point. It's fundamentally a celebration of the magnificence of the raw human spirit. To find that inner spirit of ours, we need a challenge that’s almost impossible.”

Is there a solution for socks getting holes immediately when running? Or does everyone just learn to darn and constantly fix them?

I am evidently cursed. Or March in California is cursed for races. Last year I trudged through the mud in Catalina, and today the rain came down much more than anticipated and muddied up the Valencia Trail Race so much they closed the 50k route mid-race.

So today’s big race challenge went from being a neat thing I would do for the first time, to just another muddy 18 miler. Sigh.
