This past week, I tried Unraid so that you don't have to. Is it any good in 2024? Let's find out!

@technotim i just finished watching. Great video. great unrad folder :P
but for real. You inspired me to build a homelab about 2 years ago and #unraid was my way of getting in the homelab space.

Also bei der Installation von #Yunohost hatte ich keinerlei Probleme. Ja: Es muss aktuell Debian 11 als Grundlage installiert sein. Aber das steht auch in der Doku #rtfm 😉

There’s always going to be some portion of a community that grabs the pitchforks when a company makes a change, but from what I can gather the changes that are making to their licensing are only going to benefit everyone in the long run.

New customers will get to see unraid morph into a newer, more powerful and polished product. They pay directly to support that.

Existing customers are grandfathered in for (I assume) lifetime updates. And they should be pleased that Limetech are moving to a more long term sustainable business model moving forward.

It really is a win win in my book. And I’m not even an unraid user anymore.

And, Unraid is going with annual subscriptions (with a "lifetime" option) instead of the perpetual licensing model.

Nerve-racking ~24 hours. Setting up new storage array and because I don't have enough disks for completely safe execution, I'm taking one from the old array and putting it in new one. So old is not fully protected and new is building.

I want to also setup a Hypervisor for my
Got a here with a i7 6700 and 32GB of RAM (Micro form factor).

Maybe I'm overthinking here a lot... but I try to hold down the electricity cost as much as possible.

At the moment the is at roughly ~35W

Would you guys/gals add a machine or would you rather not?
Any feedback is welcome 🙂

@jhx Great! Usually better is to write what you currently have and what you want to accomplish (current problems and how you want to solve them).
Then executing plan is usually fast and easy👌😎

This reminds me, I should also update my docs and share on website.
Maybe it will inspire others and also maybe someone will be able to suggest me better solutions than I have now 🤔
I use but want to migrate to and gain easier VM managment and bitrot protection.

The poor NAS is really struggling integrating the new disk into the array

On my way to bliss, I'm 90% with Nextcloud files and apps that can use WebDAV properly. That's good.

I wish I had time to participate in the open source development because so many things are still wonky (:

I hope all the recent funding helps 👍

I want to make a one time backup of my Photos from Mac → Unraid before I try switching from Lightroom → Darktable.

Rclone comes in handy again this is one of my favorite command-line tools. I don't need it often but it's so useful when I do.

New hard disks arrived.

I've never upgraded my NAS, and it has no free ports, so this is going to be a slow process of replacing each of the 5 drives.

After testing TrueNAS, CasaOS and Ubuntu Server on my server, I heard about . How did I not know about it before?!?

Set it up with a new dual SSD drive RAID1 setup and it's working great. I like the interface and support for both VMs and . $59 for up to 5 drives but using 30day trial now. Working on a Tunnel setup for secure remote access.

kielbasa,

@kevinctofel browsing toots for related posts and stumbled across a few of yours. I migrated to Unraid about a year ago and it’s been great. I may have moved on to another niche hobby had I not found it. How’s your journey going.

Have you made the unholy financial alliance with Lime Technology?

I'm trying to figure out if I could replace with just raw Linux and use LVM with RAID 6 atop it (spinning disk), and include a cache SSD. I've been noticing snippets around the web about it being possible, but I've never tried it. Does anybody have any experience with it that they could share? Is it feasible? Reliable?
