weekend read-in: the debut issue of dummy, dedicated to the art & oral history of pee wee's playhouse. absolutely inspiring to hear how paul reubens ran the show, making space for gary panter & other weirdo artists to essentially rewrite/redraw the folk iconography of children's television for a new generation. consider myself blessed for being the exact right age when it debuted. excited for dummy #2, too, about air pirates funnies. https://www.dummyzine.com@bookstodon#zines#comix#television
i don't think i previously grasped how brilliant alan moore was (& presumably is) as a visual artist, way more technically interesting & creative than the art accompanying the mainstream comic books he was starting to write in the same era. a few full strips from "my stars my degradation." #comics#comix#scifi /2
whoa, today is alan moore's 70th, how about that?! his 1979 sounds strip dedicated to #LSD chemists richard kemp, david solomon, & "all less celebrated POWs" #psychedelics#comics#comix /3
As we see Steamboat Willie enter the public domain, it’s important to remember Dan O’Neill and his original ragtag group of Air Pirates who literally brought The Mouse to his knees. Here’s a concise documentary on the subject:
I saw some of his art online and thought it looked like “Invisible Hands” from Liquid Television, which I LOVED. Same artist! This didn’t have quite the same level of twisted, creepiness as that animated series, but I was so happy to find his work in comic form. There’s more too.
“one cat bus away” by local artist #MyraLara (ti.ra.de.ro).
A sweet, wordless comic about public transportation, activism, and weed. I love Lara’s art, politics, taste in music … I’m lucky to know them. This was a limited edition I picked up at Short Run this year. The digital image doesn’t do the yummy riso textures justice.
