going to take Ms 9 to the SW Bike Fair to check it out and she's like "I already know how to ride a bike", so I suggest maybe they'll let you put pins in a map to say which streets shouldn't have cars on them, and she rolled her eyes so hard "DAD! They're not going to do that, it's PBOT!!" 😆

@enobacon@urbanists.social avatar

And Station 6 included @bikeloudpdx handing out propaganda and local bike shops (Rose City and Clever Cycles) with demo (Eva brought out an urban arrow 😎 ) for adults to try, and a fair bit of the parking lot coned-off, so that was really cool and I hope they sell a bunch of bikes after this. I wonder if they could have gotten more traffic from the farmers market with a car-free street setup as a loop around that bit of the neighborhood. (they don't want to let that cat out of the bag)

Q7. A friend who had heard about e-bike fires in the news asked about battery safety:

How do you feel about the safety of ebike batteries? Is there anything you currently do, or would do in the future based on what you know?

#BikeNite

enobacon,
@enobacon@urbanists.social avatar

@ascentale A7 #BikeNite I think every charger needs to have a temperature monitor via the plug, to inside the battery case. Though I don't want proprietary connectors, the same two-contact barrel plug for everything from 12 to 48V is clearly bonkers. IDK if there are studies on the common defect/incident type but a conservative temp limit should prevent most fires that could occur while charging (many #eBikes BMS might already limit that internally). Smoke detector is probably a good idea.

Q6. A good friend is finding themselves in the office for work a lot more often these days. They are looking for a convenient, low-maintenance e-bike for a multi-modal bike->train->bike/walk trip. They'd either take their bike on the train or park it in a bike locker at the station. Do you have any recommendations?

#BikeNite

enobacon,
@enobacon@urbanists.social avatar

@szeis4cookie @ascentale how much does a brompton weigh and cost with a motor? I've seen 40lb single-speed folding #eBikes for ~$800 but a bulky/clumsier fold and 250W -- that's enough for most hills if you're sub-120lb but at 200 you have to pedal that last 80. Motor top speed ~15mph but 20in wheels ride fine to 25+ (some with 12in wheels + short wheelbase probably get exciting ~ 9mph 😬 )

Sigh. US public has predictable partisan split on desirability of moving away from fossil fuels, and widespread (even among Ds) ignorance of what they can/must do to get that shift underway and meaningful: https://arstechnica.com/science/2023/06/us-public-wants-climate-change-dealt-with-but-doesnt-like-the-options/

enobacon,
@enobacon@urbanists.social avatar

@ordinoides @CelloMomOnCars @ixtility I think the underappreciated climate benefit of #eBikes, is how they open your eyes to the infrastructure problems, and build political will for giving bikes priority on our streets (there's plenty of funds, we just spend it keeping too many car lanes open for free.) Once you catch up to a driver a second and third time, you realize they're all doing 20mph at best. All extra space given to cars, beyond the most essential access, will be wasted and noisy.

What would it take for cities to retrofit or supplement their #bike counters with #eBike detectors? The growth of #eBikes for #transportation trips should not be underestimated. Maybe an EMF or heat signature? How do the standard ones distinguish multiple bikes at once? #pdxBikes #bikeTooter

enobacon,
@enobacon@urbanists.social avatar

@Drew #transportation #planners are still thinking things like "a bike heading uphill is slow", not considering space to pass, or how their designs create conflict or lead people on #eBikes to choose the lanes which #trafficEngineers imagined were now reserved just for cars. The general lack of awareness of how their designs function in reality is already bad enough, now they don't even understand what traffic they should design for.

I'm not saying an electric #cargoBike is going to solve every feminist issue in our cities, but it's a heckuva stroller/diaper bag/"sag wagon" for "encumbered travel". Being able to take kids to school or the park without having to park a car and then walk through the gauntlet of crosswalks and whatever, and they can jump out and run to the swings as soon as you get to the park sidewalk, etc. It's so great for kids to learn the neighborhood and mobility by bike.

Of all the levers you have available to pull on for #ClimateAction, the big long one labeled "ride your #bike instead of driving" requires a moderate effort and you might need to wear a hat when it rains, but the rest of the levers are too short for you to move them.

@pleaseclap @robgalanakis @UncensoredNews "... our transportation system is completely stupid" article?) but you'll also be reducing your own reliance on cars, saving money, withholding money from those 100 companies, and possibly inspiring your friends and neighbors to take the orange pill. Like if you were going to buy an e-car but bought 10 e-bikes and gave them to your friends, you see the VMT reduction there right? Also #eBikes displace ~3x car miles so it's not like eating vegan at all.

There's another round of "they knew" articles about large oil companies and climate change, this time about Shell in the 1970s.

I guess that these articles help people motivate themselves in some way, but of course they knew. Large oil companies use geophysical science and can't be completely out of touch with science in general. The apparent confusion and controversy in popular media was something that oil companies produced as propaganda, not something that they ever themselves took to be scientific knowledge.

They certainly know now, and they don't behave any differently.

There's a really good community feature on here called groups. It works like this:

  1. Follow a group's account
  2. You will start seeing posts on that topic
  3. You can post to the group by @-ing it

It's more powerful than hashtag following, as all group posts are actively pushed to all of the group's members. No one misses anything.

Find out more about groups at https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-groups-on-the-fediverse/

After a couple of rides and a recent visit to have Grey checked (where I asked the vendor to ride it with at zero to see if he too has a hard time pedaling)...

Grey ⚫🚲 is no good without 🔋 power, unlike Big Bike ⚪🚲 that rides like any regular non-powered .

vs

Sad. But good to know.
I thought I was the problem! 😅

It'll still be good for casual city riding and 1 particular yearly long group ride. 😉

@evelyn@masto.evelynyap.com avatar

The big difference between the throttle* on Grey ⚫🚲 vs Big Bike ⚪🚲:

With ⚪🚲 it's either or* throttle.

With ⚫🚲, I can throttle while* doing PAS. Like doing a kick & punch 🥋 combo. 😄 So, while pedaling on PAS 1, I can simply throttle to get a boost instead of switching up to a higher PAS. The throttle power is not dependent on the current PAS setting. Meaning on PAS 1, I can throttle up to the max* 37kph. But I won't, of course. 🤪

evelyn,
@evelyn@masto.evelynyap.com avatar

Grey ⚫ 🚲 can supposedly do 100km on a single charge. I don't go by that number. ☝️

I get nervous when battery level gets to 30% and I'm 10km away from home. I can't do pure pedal power on Grey. Plus, our city is kinda hilly.

My last ride with Grey was 40+ km with pretty steep uphill climbs. And I started out with 90% power. Battery was in the red 🔴 as I got home.

So if I have a long-ish 40+ km ride, I really should* bring the charger. 🤔

Despite Grey ⚫🚲 not letting me pedal at #PAS zero, I still get a good workout with it -- comparable to my efforts riding Big Bike ⚪🚲. That is based on the numbers reported by my #Garmin ⌚.

evelyn,
@evelyn@masto.evelynyap.com avatar

Grey ⚫🚲 doesn't have the power recovery feature (forgot the proper name for it) that some #eBikes have which, without battery power, makes it difficult to pedal, due to the resistance of the magnets. So I didn't think that purely human-powered pedaling would be an issue.

I did test ride it before buying. But the place for test riding is no good for riding in pure pedal power for wimpy me -- it's mostly inclines.
