Alright #GearSquad, I want your thoughts. One of my friends is selling off his synths and pedal collections to get a more focused setup. I'm thinking of nabbing a few for myself to add to my own excessive collection. 😆
What I want to know: what would everyone else choose to grab before he sells them off?
So #gearsquad what’s your favorite reverb? I have yet to find a plate or spring that I vibe with, so far. A shimmering hall reverb; now we seem to get along well :blobcat:
Curious what everybody feels about electric guitar strings! I want to try a set of Elixir strings. I like Ernie Ball regular slinky. Super slinky too. D’Addario (so?) have nice resonance but to me there is some uneven balance in tone and some muddiness in the lower ranges. #gearsquad#guitar#strings#electric#gear#ElectricGuitar
Hey #GearSquad I need keyboard controller recs. My studio space can accommodate a 49 key controller. This will mostly be used to record the piano arrangements for my vocals. I may use it alongside an M8 Tracker, a Lemondrop, and other little guy synths. But for the critical purpose, it needs to be a nice playing piano. I’m looking at the NI Komplete Kontrol, the Arturia Keylab 49, and the M Audio Oxygen Pro but if you have other considerations let me know. Idk about these synth style keybeds.
I am curious about strandberg guitars. Has anyone tried one? I am concerned about why the maker chooses a plastic nut at the price point. Why not graph tusq? Maybe I’m overthinking that. #guitar#GearSquad
Studio Update: A few weeks ago I was soliciting opinions about whether or not to get a Mac Mini to replace my ailing, nearly decade-old PC.
Opinions differed, leaning toward "yes but get more RAM than base model" and I had just about decided not to do it when I stumbled on a good video from a music tech vlogger I really like (video here: https://youtu.be/obkCMxaIIFM) who did exactly what I was thinking and had great results.
Godsdamn it, Pittsburgh Modular, if you could stop making badass synths that I feel like I can't live without for a while, that'd be great!
(This is in reference to the new Voltage Lab 2, as well as last year's Taiga, to a lesser degree.)
Especially since they're not cheap 😅
(No shade intended, I KNOW they're actually very cheap for what all they can do, but the raw cost is eye-watering to a indie artist who doesn't make $10's of thousands a year from music making.)
Okay, thanks to @ambergrey, I'm reliving the most recent #GearSquad posts here and am inspired to contribute my own. I'll go into detail on each guitar in comments.
But to start, this is my tiny home studio, which is also where I do basically all of my career work. It can be... distracting, sometimes, lol.
Alright, Fediverse, let's talk Tubescreamers. I got asked a question regarding the famous FS "hump" which got sent down a rabbit hole of measurements and guess what, YOU get to benefit from my hyperfixation. "tbg," you ask, "how do you have time for this with your job, and kid, and touring?" I FUCKING DON'T, SHUT UP AND READ THE THREAD AND DON'T TELL MY BOSS
(Also, apologies, no alt text, but I describe each pic in the post)
Hey #GearSquad do you all know some good professional music news/publications that would be good to follow to keep a pulse on things? Thanks!! :blobcatcoffee:
Do you have fret preferences on a guitar? Let me know your thoughts, if you’d like! :blobcatcoffee: also feel free to add a different preference in the comments if it’s not listed here. #guitar#frets#GearSquad#poll
Well, I’m now beyond frustrated with Apple. Was working with Apple Loops in Logic this morning, went to use the search feature, picked a filter and now all the loops are totally gone. I reindexed them, nothing; reinstalled & reindexed them, nothing. Deleted the preference file, rebooted, nothing. Lost all my settings when I deleted the preferences too. So looking like I need to delete anything Logic related for preferences & logs the reinstall Logic. 🤬 #apple#logic#recording#gearsquad
Really hate tech sometimes. Was listening to a tune I've been working on for the past couple of weeks yesterday & suddenly the speakers cut out. After doing a number tests rearranging cables I've determined that outputs 1 & 2 on the Apogee Symphony are no longer functional. Have to take it in now for a warranty repair, which is likely to take weeks. Really frustrated, & thinking that after all the issues I've had the past year I've chosen the wrong hobby. #gearsquad#musicproduction#recording
#NPD Cusack Music Project 34 Selenium pre/drive.
It's kind-of like a klon: vol, tone, gain, can boost and/or add dirt.
Has a switch to add bass.
I'd say it's more creamy than fizzy in character.
I don't know where to put it yet... which pedal to take off the board, where to put it in the chain. #GearSquad#guitar#GuitarPedals#GAS
Hey #GearSquad, #guitar#pickup question:
Epi Dot 335 pickup upgrade. I think what it has are called "mudbuckers". Nice tone but no sparkle.
Wilkinsons are cheap but okay - I put them on another guitar and was fine with them, but for ten times more (about what I spent on the guitar), I could get Lollar Imperials or other schmancy PAFs.
So how much better are boutique PAFs for good, prickly highs?
If you were only bringing one synth keyboard with you on stage to perform, what would you bring up there? I’m asking because I have a vision of me, my guitar, and a stage synth I could stand near and use on and off. It would have to also carry some nice analog piano sounds at times. Not sure if it’s possible to do unless it’s a midi controller with laptop. But it’d be so cool if it was a standalone analog unit. The simplicity appeals. :blobcatcoffee: #GearSquad
Chord chart for new track ‘1986’.
Inspired by the All In setting on my UA 1176 compressor, this riff has full chord strumming that needs a thinner pick. This might be the track that requires me to mic the Half Pint. As good as my other amp is into my audio interface, the Half Pint sounds better, even recorded on my iPhone. #guitar#gearsquad
