Quick introduction now that I've moved to Mastodon Music.

Swiss-based musician - bass, guitar, key, vocals of varying competencies. Played in Sydney in the 80s, Brisbane in the 90s, Myspace in the 00s + a rogue folk-acoustic set somewhere in there, nothing at all in the 10s!, and now active again. Several solo, collaborative and band activities locally and in Australia.

Also trying to recover all my old friends after the unexpected move, so boosts appreciated.

Alright, Fediverse, let's talk Tubescreamers. I got asked a question regarding the famous FS "hump" which got sent down a rabbit hole of measurements and guess what, YOU get to benefit from my hyperfixation. "tbg," you ask, "how do you have time for this with your job, and kid, and touring?" I FUCKING DON'T, SHUT UP AND READ THE THREAD AND DON'T TELL MY BOSS

(Also, apologies, no alt text, but I describe each pic in the post)

Hey friends, when I switched servers I lost my short list of folks who'd be up for giving feedback on music works in progress. Mix feedback, vibe checks, that kind of thing.

So... who'd be up for that? Maybe we could have a hashtag? or or ???

Tagging since I know some of you'd be into this too.

When I'm not writing, playing or recording music, I like to pretend I'm a luthier. This was a recent kit build (not really a luthier) of a Thoman Jazzmaster guitar. Plays and sounds better than I ever expected.

Well I’m slowly coming to the realization that my days of playing the are quite possibly coming to an end. The arthritis in my left index finger is so painful now I can barely function at all, and of course it’s the primary chording finger. I’m considering taking my cheaper Squire Strat and reversing the strings to attempt retraining myself to play left handed. It would mean reversing the nut and redoing the intonation. Any thoughts or tips ?

Alright , I want your thoughts. One of my friends is selling off his synths and pedal collections to get a more focused setup. I'm thinking of nabbing a few for myself to add to my own excessive collection. 😆

What I want to know: what would everyone else choose to grab before he sells them off?

What I have, for reference: https://mstdn.games/@LadyMarth01/110811157643903929

Long shot but my DIY analogue chorus pedal (clone of the Julia) makes clicking sounds in time with the chorus rate. I am pretty sure it originates in the TL072 op-amp used for oscillation. What I can’t work out is how to stop it. Others have built the same kit and not had the same issue. Power is clean (battery), have tried a different chip. Going slightly mad with it.

friends! I recently took my studio down to renovate and rebuild it. Most of the changes are cosmetic, but I'm wondering if I should revisit acoustic treatments, baffling, speaker placements, etc. I'm used to the setup I've had and have gotten good results with it... but I honestly haven't delved all that much into the technical details. Any thoughts on how I should approach it without letting my "oh, it sounds fine" thoughts cloud my judgment? Should I bring in an acoustics expert? Use a particular software? Just trust my familiarity with the room? I don't want to overthink it, but I really, really don't want to underthink it. 😅

Ever use a fixed resistor in parallell to a potentiometer on lugs 1 & 3?
How's it work out?
I figure one of equal value would halve the total load but also affect the taper?
EG 10 and 10 would 5 total but (5*10)/(5+10) ~= 3.3 with the pot turned halfway.

Okay, thanks to @ambergrey, I'm reliving the most recent posts here and am inspired to contribute my own. I'll go into detail on each guitar in comments.

But to start, this is my tiny home studio, which is also where I do basically all of my career work. It can be... distracting, sometimes, lol.

One more update for the :

I finished my budget upgrade of my budget Yamaha Revstar, and I'm really really pleased. The pickups (Surf 90s) sound great! Bright top end, thumping low end in the neck position, super articulate, all the things you want out of a P90-esque pickup.

And the trem is kind of mind blowing. There's no slack in the arm, the vibrato is very smooth, and tuning stability is no problem at all (also upgraded to a roller bridge)

I'm in love with this again!

This seems like one for the - it makes sense that I can't use two barrel connectors (with 9V adapters) off of a single Onespot daisychained pedal power plug on this 80s 18V Ibanez Flanger - it gets pulled down and everything hooked up to it shuts off. But why won't two Onespots work? The pedal won't turn on without ACTUAL BATTERIES and I'd rather not keep feeding it batteries. The pedal can make a nice warm Leslie sound. In other news, I have an extra Onespot now. 🫠

Firebird! More dirt than usual for the rhythm guitars on this track so I hit the challenge of competing frequency airspace when adding a lead overdub. Don’t think I solved it but it’s time to move on. I also wanted a bass-drums single chord groove somewhere in this track, hence the change near the end. The outro solo was one take with 3 pedals (distortion, phaser and tape flanger) maxed for bombast.

Picked up the lefty Fender Squier Tele this afternoon. This is going to be a lot harder than I had thought. In my mind the fingering was pretty simple. In reality my fingers are in the way. I feel like I'm starting all over again. sigh

New vid on my YouTube channel:

How do you know when you messed up enough that you should try again?!? In this video I walk you through a recorded Yamaha CS-15 bass part that I loved...then hated. Spoiler alert: I decide to re-record the part, and show you why it was worth the time.

I don't know what's come over me, but I finally made some videos in my studio. And it was pretty fun to do!

Here's one where I talk about using + the Push 3 as an arranging tool:

What does think about the IK iRig USB?

https://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/irigusb/

$70 and it comes with desktop versions of Amplitube and ToneX (iOS appears to be free anyway). Giving me some serious GAS. But my mobile landscape is all Android and I already have Mustang Micro. So I'd only be getting the desktop usage. But ...😅

I forgot in my earlier post, I think you folks might appreciate. Adding some analog stank (and humanity) to sterile computer sounds.

Ie. All-analog mix of electronic music through an A&H GL2200 and 14 analog compressors (mostly dBx, but a Drawmer and an Ashley in there too).

This mix creates the general structure for a final (much tighter) edit/mix/master in , which I'll do sometime in the next couple of weeks...

Hey s, has anyone had any dealings with Fulltone lately?

Yes, I'm aware that the founder has some odious political leanings, but the reason I ask is because I'm trying to sell this OCD pedal which lacks 2 of 4 thumbscrews. Last Friday I saw that they sell em on the Fulltone site, so I ordered a set. I got an automated "thank you, we'll let you know when we ship", and then...

nothing.

In my tea business, I never let 48 hours go by w/o shipping, so...idk. Ghost site?

Ayyyy let’s talk about amplifier speakers today. What’s the best speaker you’ve heard or used? Size? What amp was it paired with? Tell us why it changed your sonic life.

Must. Not. Buy. Bigger. Pedal. Board. Must. Not. Buy. Bigger. Pedal. Board.

But srsly one of these is going to have to at least temporarily make way for a tube screamer kit that’s in the mail.

Shout out to Templo Devices for the lovely packaging with this Pocket Comp! Happy to support a small Canadian company and excited to see how this little unit helps integrate vocals into my setup
