Have recently got every into researching administrative records of past students. This was a fun post to do, where a member of the family of the student filled in some of the gaps that the administrative record masks

Next was an enjoyable discussion with Richard Thaler on choice architecture and at the . While this is a good overview of the underlying theory and what nudges can and can't do, Thaler's techno-solutionism is troubling, especially when he brings up the superiority of algorithms to people in the bail context (see, for example, https://www.propublica.org/article/how-we-analyzed-the-compas-recidivism-algorithm) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEkfqQAp6wk (4/6)

First was an incredible slate of talks and panel on , , and decisions at the with Erica Thompson, @DianeCoyle1859, and Stephanie Hare. There's so much here in each talk - how models and data are inherently imperfect, a whirlwind tour of philosophy to analyze technology, and more. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mcVN23wL3I (2/8)

There's a lot of discussion about bias in terms of gender, race, ethnicity etc., but what do we actually mean by bias?

The notion of bias is often discussed informally, also in academic literature, leading to imprecise discussions and potentially to misguided policy recommendations, which may even have adverse effects.

@vtraag and I propose a more systematic way of studying biases https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/impactofsocialsciences/2023/05/25/the-bias-puzzle-understanding-gender-differences-in-academia/.

Our blog post is based on a preprint published last year https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2207.13665.

Nature recently introduced new guidelines for studies engaging with questions of race, ethnicity or gender. Among others, it asks researchers to explain how they controlled for variables. We agree this is important, especially because we think and should be understood in terms. In this impact blog, @LudoWaltman and I discuss some of the challenges around this.

British households have paid £7bn (€8bn) since Brexit to cover the extra cost of trade barriers on food imports from the EU, according to researchers at the London School of Economics (LSE).

The university’s latest report estimating the impact of leaving the bloc on UK food prices found that trade barriers were consistently hampering imports, pushing up bills by an average £250 (€290).
