I've been what might be loosely called a #musician for the last 30 years or thereabouts. My #music is variously #psychedelic, #ambient, #satire, #spacerock, #kosmische, #electronic, #minimalist, #outsider & #avantgarde. Nowadays, I'm a semi-hermit living with my partner & two sons in an old farmhouse & studio overlooking world heritage listed rainforest in #Australia's Northern Rivers. Anti-corporation, #anticapitalist, old-school leftie #socialist, #freesoftware, #diy, #synthesizers.

Congrats to ALL of those who participated in #Fedivision! I'm generally speaking opposed to competitions as a whole, particularly in the arts, but Fedivision is such a positive, comradely & not all that serious event that it's impossible not to enjoy. Not only that, I've also discovered great new #music and fedi #musicians to follow - so it's a win-win in my book. Particular thanks to the organisers @futzle @zatnosk & @TQ - fantastic behind the scenes work!

Fascinating to note some of the reactions to my entry "[RIGE] Fake News". While I'm generally opposed to -ever- explaining lyrics in my & think everyone is entitled to their interpretation, I'm going to break my own rule here & say that the song is questioning the very concept of Fake News itself, rather than claiming "there's a lot of fake stuff out there". I've written an unexpectedly long pseudo-academic essay about it here, if you're so inclined. https://maxvolu.me/fake-news

Is KoFi still the most good vibe payments platform for indie folks?

Boosts welcome.

@mxtthxw As far as I'm aware, it is. I really like the look of both & , but since they both only do recurrent donations, a la Patreon, they're not so useful for musicians.

@amadeus @Ercanbrack @SKRiley_Author @alf @falktx @gmslater @graves501 @macberg @nund @vlcam Thanks! (Though I gotta admit I'm feeling neither lovely, or particularly human right now, on account of coming down with an unpleasant & lingering virus that my son brought home from school).

I see your and raise you one . Pretty sure it's a Peron's Tree . I was quite surprised to see it change colour from chalky grey to mottled green over the space of a couple of minutes. Clever, not to mention cute, little fella!

There goes the neighborhood. I suspect the experience will be about as traumatic as the TV series, too.

Something I'd like to see in my hypothetical, ideal etc client is a read / unread functionality, similar to RSS readers. Lists somewhat fulfil this function, but I still miss lots of posts from people, particularly infrequent posters, who I'm keen to read. The "mark scrolled articles as read" of most rss readers function, would allow me to go back & check out posts / toots that I'd not yet seen. It'd be nice, but I can see there'd be technical problems with it.

I just lost lost all control of my bodily functions with equal parts fear & excitement upon learning that certainly the world's greatest horror author & film maker is guest on Stuart Maconie's Freak Zone (it's also a special, talking about some Doctor person who gets around in a blue box). https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001sn53

I keep seeing "Weird Al" as "Weird AI" (depending on your font, you probably won't be able to tell the difference). If he doesn't use that on his next album, I'll be very surprised. Also - good to see him having a nice dig at the exploitative platform, the name of which I shall not darken this toot with.

It's certainly nice to have some good news once in a while. I haven't witnessed this level of shared celebration since kicked the bucket.

My list of sites has reached 29! That's pretty amazing, since my list was only 5 a month or so ago. I'm still keeping my personal list of sites updated here - are there any I'm missing as of the moment? https://maxvolu.me/faircamp-sites

Prototype aggregator:

https://ten-thousand-sounds.com

Had a go at a Faircamp style aggregator - made with a python script that downloads the feed.rss file from sites that have it, then uses faircamp to generate a label mode Faircamp site from them. All links from the directory page are replaced so they go to the respective artist release page or home page. The result is one page that has links out to everyone's own pages and has the faircamp look.

@yonder @freebliss @meljoann @keefmarshall Very nice! I can see this sort of thing coming in very handy for potential future network discovery capabilities.

While I understand the sentiments of the various "don't delete your from " posts that are floating around... (a) It's my music and I'll do what I want with it, (b) my music is available elsewhere, so what's the problem?, (c) BC was (at least originally) where you purchased & then downloaded the music, not a streaming platform. I know I'm the minority nowadays, but when I pay for something virtual, I damn-well want a copy on my own drive, not floating on some corporate cloud.

@mxtthxw I've been vehemently anti- since the whole DeCSS thing in 2000, so I pretty much missed out on being stung by that kind of thing. It was the one of the two reasons I started using in the first place - no DRM - the other reason was flac support.

Going through 20+ year old multitracks & masters stored on very iffy looking CD & DVD backups for a re-mastering project. To say it's an experience fraught with fear, uncertainty and distrust would be an understatement.

@dan_lerch is the closest we have at the moment - though it's a bit more like Soundcloud than Bandcamp. I suspect we'll start seeing more options soon. https://www.funkwhale.audio/

One of the main benefits of a ecosystem would be that while I personally have no interest at all in an "all-in-one" bells & whistles music discovery / scrobbling / streaming / social extravaganza "Platform A" - I could still follow and interact from my minimalist zen low-overhead solar-powered self-hosted single-user instance of "Platform B". Exactly how say & happily interact. (Sung to the tune of "Ebony and Ivory").

1/4 In the mid 90s through to early 2000s, I ran an , sold tapes, cds & even had streaming downloads (Realplayer!). In those early web days, I was generally laughed at to try to do such a thing (then again, people still laugh at me, but that's another matter). Later on, I ran a full e-commerce downloads site at a slightly larger scale but still very much . I've been gradually working towards doing it all again recently, bearing in mind the lessons I've learned.

mxv,
@mxv@social.tryptophonic.com avatar

2/4 So having been heavily involved in internet distribution for almost 30 years now, my two main thoughts are - (a) simplicity is always best. Both in frontend and backend. Nice clean interface. Don't make the backend try to do too many things but one thing well. (b) Finance is always the problem. Accepting payments is almost always a nightmare. It's generally also the point at which most ethical systems / standards break down.

mxv,
@mxv@social.tryptophonic.com avatar

3/4 You'll note I make no mention of promotion. An album is an album, not a vehicle for promotion. The day artists have to become promoters is the day art dies. Same with the website front / backend. Its job is to make the art available. Yes, of course, promotion is necessary if one is to exist in "an industry", but it should be a separate thing. Musicians do not, and probably should not, need to become experts in the physical process of manufacturing vinyl / CD production, for example.

mxv,
@mxv@social.tryptophonic.com avatar

4/4 It's a huge conversation, and I probably should have written this in a longer form essay - it's hard not to make sweeping statements that are open to misinterpretation in small posts. Still, I'd like to make it clear that I fully support any project that's responding to the situation. A healthy ecosystem is one that is composed of a large variety of smaller cultures - not ruled by a single monoculture. Vive la différence!
