A COSMIC ARROW PIERCED PLUTO'S HEART — IS IT STILL THERE BENEATH THE SURFACE?

A giant impact likely formed Pluto’s heart-shaped basin, Sputnik Planitia. A big chunk of the impactor’s core might still be buried under the ice.

is a planet.

  1. It's big enough to be spherical.
  2. It clears out its orbit because of its mass.
  3. It has an atmosphere and seasons.
  4. It has five natural satellites.

The only reason it was ever downgraded is because we went through a period of adoring celebrity astronomers and letting them get away with extremely stupid decisions.

I still say is a planet (it has several moons, thin atmosphere, semi-complex geology, & most importantly, human favor), but whatever.

That said, I wonder if the other planet is an ice giant like & or a super

TIL: the massive amount of heat that is generated in earth's core, that moves continents around the surface and creates mountains, volcanoes, and geothermal vents, comes from radioactive decay of heavy elements in earth's core.

And I'm learning a lot more, like Pluto has an atmosphere. And smog.

Learned watching BBC documentary about the discoveries of the probe sent to photograph .

I know the Fediverse generally skews towards the scientific consensus, but I'm curious with how you feel about the International Astronomical Union (IAU) demoting Pluto to dwarf planet status back in 2006?

Learned about yesterday and that sounds like a fun way to talk about stuff I like so I’ll start mine off with my favorite of all time, ! It’s a really beautiful story that’s less about the murders of the most powerful robots on the planet, and more about the brutality and beauty of emotion and how we navigate it.

: Pluto's approximately 50-km wide moon Nix was imaged by NASA's New Horizons spacecraft on July 14, 2015. The red area is likely a region of tholin deposition and/or formation. Tholins are abiotic complex organic solids possibly produced when ultraviolet light from the faraway Sun breaks down molecules of methane that escape Pluto.
